Anybody into chess? Chess Titans software came with my laptop....and I can't beat the fugger. Well, at 37% winning margin....level 6 from a 1-10 scale.

Live with an opponent, or this computer shit? I'm up to 42% now....but I can't believe a software program can kick my ass.hasbeen;1371720 wrote:I haven't played in a while. I did enjoy it when I was playing.

I played chess a lot until I turned about 13 or so. I've become relatively rusty.
Still can whip someone if they were never into it, but I wouldn't trust myself to do much against a fan of the game.

Really? What's your name? I might know you. My real name is Bobby Fischer.

I'm pretty good at chess. I credit the game largely for my success in life. Well that and being fortunate enough to get into Ohio State.

Is this fact? I think the best human players in the world beat Deep Blue a few times.queencitybuckeye;1374455 wrote:The best programs can beat every human player.

Successors to Deep Blue as the top computer "player" have beaten a number of then-current and former world champions. They don't win every game, but seldom lose.sleeper;1374460 wrote:Is this fact? I think the best human players in the world beat Deep Blue a few times.

Once the Africans start playing chess, they'll need something bigger than a computer to compete with them. :thumbup:queencitybuckeye;1374466 wrote:Successors to Deep Blue as the top computer "player" have beaten a number of then-current and former world champions. Yeah. I hate losing to a machine. So I dump water on it and laugh.Footwedge;1374274 wrote:Live with an opponent, or this computer shit? I'm up to 42% now....but I can't believe a software program can kick my ass.

When I was young, I was really into chess. But haven't really played for a while and kind of suck now. I need to be at about the most basic levels to beat the computer any more. So much for those youthful dreams of being a grandmaster, I guess.

I too used to be pretty good at chess, or at least I thought I was until I stopped playing people and starting going against the computer. It would always crush me. My roommate apparently used to be one of the highest ranked players in Ohio in hs, nearly beat the #4 guy ranked nationally in some tourney, but made a rookie mistake and lost his queen.. Tragic. It haunts him to this day. You know when you talk about your biggest regret in a football game in hs? Well, apparently chess players have the same thing.
I played recently, and did alright. I never know a good way to set up my pawns.

It's funny. I was with my in-laws at their lake house, and I found a chess set among their board games. My mother-in-law and wife both said, "Oh, (brother-in-law) is really good at chess! You probably shouldn't play him."bwcomet89;1374974 wrote:I played recently, and did alright. I never know a good way to set up my pawns.
Beat him in about 13 moves, and they were all pretty dumbfounded. Made for a funny day. Now they talk about me like that, even though that's the only game I've played in over a decade.

When you play against a peeeeeple, you have the opportunity to study the board while he ponders his move. This can take between 1 to 10 minutes. With the computer, he moves in less than one second. That is intimidating.bwcomet89;1374974 wrote:I too used to be pretty good at chess, or at least I thought I was until I stopped playing people and starting going against the computer. Now, if I were to take 10 minutes plus before every move, which obviously I could, I would beat the IT son of a bitch at least half the time. I do not have that kind of patience.
I play late at night just to relax and stimulate my brain. As it turns out, I lose 61% of the time so far, and I go to bed pissed off and can't sleep.
Gonna quit...and stick to duplicare bridge (with real peeeeeple), where I'm a few points light of being a life master.
