Baseball writers rejected the steroid era 'tainted' players by a large margin. Bonds, Clemens, Sosa....despite their huge numbers only received about 40% of the votes necessary for election. The man who first broke Babe's long standing HR record, Mark McGuire, received even less, this on his seventh try, the lowest he's gotten so far.

Craig Biggio was the closest...getting just shy of 69% ...38 votes short of election. Jack Morris was second, just a few votes behind. It was Morris' 14th try...he will have just one more year left of eligibility. Mike Piazza was third.

Cleveland Indians fans will be disappointed that hometown favorites Kenny Lofton and Sandy Alomar Jr. were mentioned on only about 3% of the ballots...leaving them short of the 5% required to stay on next year's ballot.

Yeah....no reason to start a thread ever.

Pro Sports should have 3 threads.

Horseshit.

I guarantee you that every one of those guys who voted no for them to get in the Hall, voted FOR them to win MVPs, Cy Young's and so forth.

And no, he will(unfortunately) never get in the Hall.

JA Adande had a tweet about it. And I totally agree with him. It's so hypocritical of them.

I was listening to Mike and Mike at about 6:30 this morning, Buster Olney called in as they brought it up because they knew all along that no one was getting in and started this discussion. He said he votes for the best player regardless of circumstance. In the case of the Steroid Era, he says MLB's decisions are what resulted in it, so it is what it is, and I basically agree.

Him or Greeny made the comment that you don't see MLB giving back their astronomical revenues from that time, so the players shouldn't take all of the hit on it.

I posted an article and a comment from a football sports writer in the other thread that makes the same point. The rules of MLB didn't really say much about it. They played within in the culture of the game at the time.

I agree with that...but something like this deserves it's own thread anyway. Wastebasket threads are for minor news.

Sorry I stepped on your thread, hasbeen.... I just didn't think of this as 'random chatter'.

I know there may be legal ramifications and such with Clemens, Bonds and the like but what if they did this....

What if Bonds, Clemens came out and admitted to their steroid use and WHEN they started it. WHat if their numbers before they started it were good enough for HoF? Would they vote for them then? OF course one would have to believe them as to when they said they started.

When he's dead, I think he will. I think he will eventually get in there.

Clemens might be able to get in depending on when he started since he had such a long career. All depends on when he started. Bonds on the other hand, you can kind of pinpoint for the most part when he started roiding. And his numbers wouldn't have been good enough.

I'm curious to see which year you are pinpointing. I think he WOULD have had the numbers of a HOF, even without steroids.

I think Rose will get into the hall post humously also. He gets more attention NOT being in the hall than if he was in already. I think it is a case of not rewarding him for his transgressions while he is alive. They want to make that point....do something like this...and you'll never see the HOF.

I think Clemens would have been in the Hall regardless, also.
Ithink another way to look at this is that even if Clemens was using 'roids at some point...he was pitching against guys that were using also.

Even if Bonds was using 'roids at some point, he was hitting against pitchers that were using also.

I imagine some pitchers were using, but the numbers do not quite jive. If pitchers were effectively using and benefitting from the use of roids then we should have seen something statistically speaking. HR's were flying out of parks, ERAs were increasing, and I dont recall seeing an abundance of guys throwing alot harder.

If they were using, and I imagine some were, they didnt seem like they were seeing the upside as much as the hitters were.
I understand that it is too different things though. A hitter bulking up and using is going to see more benefits than a pitcher, just by the nature of what they do.
