Of course I know the significance, It's my 29th birthday.

It should remain sacred. The Browns won't play a meaningful game before then.

Why didn't the NFL and AFL champions play a championship between the two champions?

NFL had 14 teams (7 in each conference) and AFL only had 8 (4 in each)

A lot of ties back then.

I remember well watching that game, just about the time they started having the first instant replays and isolated camera replays. Up till then, watching it on TV was like being at a game in person, and if you missed seeing it when it happened, you were out of luck. Every time Gary Collins caught a TD pass from Frank Ryan, my dad and I anxiously awaited the replay of what move Gary used to get to open!

The AFL was in direct competition with the NFL and they hated each other. The AFL started playing football in 1960, and unlike other pro start ups, this league was well funded with major great players. CBS did the local NFL games and NBC countered with a Sunday game of the week.

The AFL was raiding players....good players left and right. Heisman winner Billy Cannon, Daryl Lamonica, Abner Haines, Jack Kemp, Buck Buchanan...endless list of star players.

Then in the early to mid 60's, the Jets drafted and signed the 2 top college quarterbacks. John Huart of ND and Joe Willy from Bama..for 200,000K and 400,000K respectively. This at a time when Alex Karas, Bart Starr, and Paul Hornung were making maybe 40K per year.

The war was officially declared.

The NFL finally figured it out..,..that unlike the ol All America Football Conference, this league was here to stay.

My brother and I sat together at the game on or about the 20 yard line courtesy of my dad. The Browns were heavy underdogs facing a team that played in a much tougher conference and had lost only once.

Unitas, Berry, Lenny Moore, John Mackey...an endless list of HOFers from that Colts team.

0-0 at the half, and the Browns came out and steamrolled them in the second half. Not only do I remember the game like it was yesterday, we had fun listening to the radio re-broadcast that evening and the play by play by the legendary Gib Shanley.

And in 730 days, I will fondly commiserate the moment for my deceased father and brother.
