The company I will work for is located in the same building (Halle Building) where the Santa scene is taken. Actually they just moved out of it recently.

The casino is where higbees used to be I think. The outside opening scene is definitely public square. I went to the Christmas Story House and museum a week or 2 ago. Kind of lame, but seeing the outside and visiting the museum was pretty cool. The inside scenes and the town were all filmed in Canada, but the outside of the house is in Cle, and the owner tried to renovate the inside to look like the movie. Anyway, I watch it once or twice throughout the day
