The kid who scored 138 points in a game last night for Grinnell College got me thinking about Jon Diebler and Upper Sandusky's frenzied attack. I followed Jon all through high school, attending oodles of games at both Fostoria and Upper, and always thought he'd have a night where he'd put a hundred on the board. Seventy-seven is as close as he'd ever get, but he just simply ran out of games.

Coach Keith Deibler has taken his uptempo carnival on court to Genoa High School in northern Ohio, where he has stated he will continue to full-court press and score as many points as possible. For those in the know in Genoa Area, does he have the kids to do this? The shooters? How will Genoa fare this season? I'd like to go to a game or two if they have some success playing the Upper Way.

Keep tabs on Genoa here.

Played against Diebler when he was at Gibsonburg. It was fun to play them because if you could take care of the ball and beat the press it was a layup drill. He didn't have the athletes there or enough of them for his style, except for when his oldest son scored 75 against my high school.

As for Genoa, they usually have some really good athletes but have struggled finding coaching that could satisfy the community. I have a buddy that has a cousin who will be a freshman and Diebler's style was a compete culture shock to the previous regime but everyone had been buying into it as of a month ago. I'm sure I'll probably see them play a few times this year, will be interesting to see how it goes.

Good stuff. It definitely will be fascinating. I'm thrilled to see Diebler back in the Suburban Lakes League (well, NBC. Sigh).

Being from the area, I saw numerous Gibsonburg Golden Bear games in the late '90s, and they had some scorers in those days, including the oldest of the Diebler brothers, Jeremiah, and another kid by the name of Jon Jackson (if I remember correctly). As you say, Keith never had the sheer number of guys in those days who could play that run-and-gun style a full 32 minutes as he did at Fostoria and Upper, but Gibsonburg was still an exciting team to watch and made it all the way to regionals in '98. I was in the building as a middle-schooler on one particular night when Jeremiah dropped 60, just a night removed from scoring 65 in another area gym. He was rattlesnake quick and just a devastating defender, which is how he garnered a lot of his points, off of steals in the open court.

As always, I am sure in addition to a few athletes, Genoa also has at least one Arvydas Sabonis but minus the talent. Lol. Zach Diekman and Bellhoffer (sp?) come to mind. Those guys were giants, seven foot each at least. I think Bellhoffer was 8 feet.

Wonnell from there has started a few games for Toledo and plays nightly. Anyways this season Genoa has a chance to go 0-22 as they were defeated by Lake 118-62. They have no football players on the team and it shows. Basically he somehow has to stop the trend of the best skipping out on the sport as has occurred since Genoa became a football power

Whoa. I have been searching for Genoa scores but Toledo's sports websites suck and are cumbersome to navigate. It sounds as if Keith is trying to do with this team what he did with Upper his last couple of seasons: continue to play in NBA Jam mode despite having absolutely nobody who can play. Some of the scores of Upper's games the year after Jon and then Alex Faulk left were grisly. I remember losses like 118 to 62 or 120 to 80 being routine for the Rams.

It's a shame Genoa's kids are not going out for basketball anymore, but I imagine now that Mike Vicars is out the football team will return to being ordinary sooner than later.

I doubt it. Tim Spiess is a great coach and the numbers all the way through the youth programs are insane anymore. Genoa has built such a big program it seems they're turning into a school where football is everything

If you want scores, check out: http://www.davey1.com

Breaks down all of the league schedules in NW Ohio, complete with game results. A very nice resource!

Lol. Wow.

How long do you think Keith will be committed to this program, and is there any potential in the middle school ranks at Genoa to come up and turn things around?

I guess one star football player is coming out and many plan to join the basketball team next season. It seems as if he will now get the best the school has to offer and that's always good

Definitely. I will keep an eye on the Comets over the next couple of seasons and might catch a game or two if things start to turn for the better. When he has some athletes and a good group of shooters, Diebler has the most exciting style of coaching that you'll find in the area.

Checked the box score and Genoa put 104 on the board against Northwood. They also gave up 88. Baby steps.

Yeah it will be interesting to see them when they get really good in a couple years. IMO right now Central is the most exciting team in the area to watch, can fly on the fastbreak and shoot terrifically

So after two years in the books, how is the Keith Diebler Experiment going at Genoa? Anyone here follow the team at all? Are they still getting their ass kicked while trying to play like the '85 Lakers?

Yeah. Sounds like he might get the boot as they were destroyed by both Lake and Eastwood this season. The Flyers beat them by 36 and 41 while Eastwood beat them by 41 and 16 and the team went 10-14 beating Woodward by 2 and then getting hammered by 54 to Scott

Shit. I honestly thought he'd do better, but then again, if you look at Keith's career, he never really had much success without any of his ultra-talented sons on the team (he won a pair of SLL titles and got to regionals with Jeremiah at Gibsonburg; put Fostoria on the state map and took the Redmen deep into the tournament with Jake and Jon; and then obviously won a state title and reached another state final four with each at Upper).

He's great when he has the talent. Not so much when he doesn't. As LakeFlyerMike said, Keith just isn't great at adapting and it's why he's average at best without elite talent.

To be fair though I think if either of us coached an SLL school and had any of the Dieblers play for us we would make deep runs. Ha I mean come on no one around here could stop that

Yeah he needed to go after the Scott embarrassment. They had enough of losing games by astronomical scores because he was hell bent on running his system with a group that couldn't and paid for it dearly
