I'm not sure they have to change all that much. The latinos did appear to vote pretty consistently on the immigration issue, but for the most part I think that bloc continues to otherwise be up for grabs.

Maybe things haven't changed all that much and we just underestimate how difficult it is to beat an incumbent. I'm not sure Repubs need to redefine their values, they maybe just need to be less outspoken on some of the hot button. Shame on them for letting this election be about small issues. That and they can't let the media use a few guys who put their foot in their mouth to demonize the entire party. Yeah, Joe Biden says dumb shit and he gets a pass, but that's the reality they have to deal with.

And I'm not sure how much the Tea Party has really been hijacked so much as that being the narrative the media wants to portray. They will attack and demonize any faction that could potentially be a threat to liberalism and their control. If the libertarians ever get any real traction it will be the same thing, other than perhaps Maher will get a little nostalgic.

Trying to get my hands around this demographics thing. Are you implying that latinos, for instance, are incapable of ascribing to conservative principles, say 'extreme' ideas like a balanced budget, or a debt reduction plan, or restructurings to Social Security and Medicare to insure their long-term viability, for their own benefit? Are you implying that blacks would prefer being housed in the liberal welfare state instead of a having a good job? Are you suggesting that single women would prefer to have their kids saddled with ten of thousands of dollars of government debt, than to advocate for modest fiscal restraint?

I think most Americans, not just groups carved up and defined by democrat think, want to move in a positive direction, based on rational thought and economic reality.

If you are trying to say the President needs to move toward the middle, then yes, but then again, nearly all do their second term. They all become more pragmatic, willing to compromise and deal.

The problem is less that they aren't capable of ascribing to such things, it's that they recognize that both parties are lying through their teeth about being the party to accomplish it. Neither has any intention of doing so.

As you know Clinton moved across the aisle in accepting the Gingrich/Kasich budget proposal that led to the near-balanced budget of the late '90's. Of course Clinton was not nearly as liberal as obama, nor as arrogant I don't think. [sidebar: always chuckle when I hear democrats refer to the greatness of the Clinton balanced budget; they were fathered by the demonic Gingrich and Kasich; hilarious].

Anyhow, if you are the leader you have to set the agenda and make the first move. So, (and this is the question I posed to you and Boatshoes the other night and never got a reply) will it be "either accept my radical agenda, or screw you", OR will it now be, "we must gain a solution that solves our problems and it will involve compromise on my part including real spendig cuts (not the fake ones D.C. is famous for), and I want you to know that, and I hope you will budge on your end also; let's meet tomorrow morning to begin the work."
