A buddy texted me and asked if I was interested in buying Beats by Dre headphones. The price he gave me is ridiculous and I was just wondering why they were priced so high?

All the audiophiles I know agree, Beats are way overpriced for the quality they give. I can't tell you why other than you're paying a premium for the logo on the side of the headphones.

Such crap for the cost.

Stay far away. Their earbuds are OK, but also nothing great.

You gotta be more specific. Over the ear? Earbuds? Budget? There are tons of options. I posted a link from Cnet a while ago with reviews by price range.

I'm an earbud guy. I recently had some Klipsch S4Is.....amazing for the price with iPhone control built into the wire. I lost them in a cab about a month ago. :(

Now I have the Skull Candy 50/50 mic'd version. Good bang for the buck. They can be had for $40-50. I'm done buying higher end models. I wear them for hours a day and wear them way too quickly to be dropping $100+ each time.

Wow. I just looked up the Beats by Dre on Best Buy's website and they are ridicolously priced. I can't imagine paying that much for headphones.

They are for my wife. She can't do ear buds. She also wears them hours a day. Music/Entertainment purposes would be secondary as they would be mainly used to listen to voice calls, doesn't need a mic either.

I believe Sony has a solid $50 over the ear model, no clue which ones exactly.

For the same price there are much better headphones and earbuds to be had. It's not so much that they're complete shit or anything it's just that there's far better options if you're spending that kind of cash.

I got Beats by Dre because they said Dre on them. Hope that helps. I'm also utterly reckless with money.

I actually do like the Beats, but that's probably because I really only have the Apple iPod earbuds to compare them to (which are obviously not quality headphones). Have never really tried any other variety of headphones. Are the Skull Candy headphones/earbuds pretty good?

The question as far as headphones go is really dependent on price. Because no Skull Candy headphones aren't good, off course they're also really cheap so we don't have the expectation of them to be really good. The thing to find out is not whether a certain set is good but whether they're the best available at that price point.

Same with anything else really. I don't expect a $300 TV or a $2000 car to be particularly nice so instead we try to maximize the quality we receive for the price.

Totally agree. Great response.

So, at the Beats price point ($200), what are some ideas for better pairs of headphones?
