Have recently gotten into bow hunting. Don't know anyone around here with land to hunt on. What's the best route to find a place to hunt? Go to local farms/wooded properties and ask them for permission? Or just go to the public land for now?
Have also heard the DNR has a list of farms who want people to come hunt to keep down population. Anyone know about this? Tried calling, but had to leave a message and haven't heard back for about a week. I'm in Richland county by the way.

You can ask the land owners and may have some luck. Most of the time unless you know them they will say no. I found it easier to talk to friends in the area that hunt and try to get into some areas with them.

I am not familiar with that county, sorry. You may just want to take a chance and approach every farmer you can and ask permission to hunt their property, even offer to split the meat with them if you get a deer on their property. You could also stop by some of the local feed stores and ask if they know of any farmers that may allow you to hunt on their property. Deer hunting is a big money maker for land owners nowadays, so it may be a little hard to find guys willing to let you hunt for free. Good luck with the hunting and stay safe.

I think you were talking about the huntohiofarms program that the state tried but it didn't have many farmers willing to participate so they ended the program

I talked to some friends who hunt and told me about some lesser known public land in the area. Headed out this morning for my first time hunting. Took my climber and was in the tree all morning. Didn't see any deer, but saw about 10 turkeys land in front of me. Even though I didn't see any deer, it was still awesome being out there and watching the sun come up.

Any bow hunters use a Jordan Stalker recurve? Seems he sells most of his bows in Italy.

Last night I had a climber on my back and was walking back to a spot I had scouted out. No more than 15 yards walking into the woods I spooked 4 deer, and in the same spot coming out spooked 3 more. Any special secret to avoid this? Or it just happens? Obviously I try to be as quiet as possible while walking back there. When I go back tonight I'm thinking of setting up closer to the edge of the woods where I saw them last night.

Getting out there earlier might help.

The big one I missed came back but still to far to take a shot. I am gonna take my cross bow and go sit where I have been seeing him. I did shoot a young doe last week and started making some jerky.

Did you get buck fever? Shaking real bad while trying to aim. I know my first doe I didnt get it but the first buck I could hardly stop shaking.

Yup, got myself a Buck Boner and couldn't keep my aim steady. Guess I could look at it as I know I'm setting up in right spot now, saw 2 yesterday and 1 today. Would have been real nice to have my first deer be a nice little 8 pointer.

You will get another chance. Just take a few deep breathes before you shoot and relax. The first time is a rush though

Yup...the ol' buck fever. I remember killing my first buck. We were doing a drive and I was just there chillin on an stump. All of the sudden it comes running up on me and stops about 10 yards away, broadside. I was shaking, but somebody managed to hit it in the jugular with my single shot 20 guage. The thing was a bitch to track. It took me a few hours to find it two hillsides over.

Congrats & well done! I'd prefer mine made into jerky & trail bologna. ;)
