From ESPN:
The Big Ten confirmed to me Tuesday that both Penn State and Ohio State can be named official Leaders division champions this season -- and, in Penn State's case, during the next three seasons -- despite the postseason ban. The teams even would earn a trophy from the league for winning the division. The division representative in the Big Ten title game would not have the "champion" label if it finishes second or third in the standings.

Don't think Penn State will have to worry about that designation any time soon.

That makes it a little nicer for the seniors if we can pull it off

Um, duh? Perhaps I don't understand what this means?

I think you probably understand it ... basically, if Ohio State finishes first in the Leaders and Purdue finishes second, when announced at the championship game, Purdue would not be the "Leaders Division Champions." They'd just be the representatives from the Leaders Division.

I think it makes sense as the ban is only for post-season play. The division championship is a regular season attribute as it is won during the regular season not the post-season.

Why call someone division champs that can't represent the division?

I can see that side too. Just another * for the record books.

gotta' agree with these two, Webbie--why does it seem dumb that "if" they win the division, they actually are the champions of that division? makes perfect sense to me

It comes off as the B1G thinking they're better than everyone again/as usual (in this case, better than the organization that they choose to be a part of that levied the sanctions, the NCAA)

Pac-12 did the opposite last year and did NOT name USC the division champion.

I guess I see it as a team can be B1G champs without being division champs. THAT doesn't make sense. But technically, OSU is only banned from post-season, which doesn't include being a division champ.

So, I see both sides. :)

Interesting takes on this decision...I guess, like most everything else, this can be perceived from various angles. However, it does give OSU and PSU coaches a motivational tool to use as the season draws to a close. Plus, a '2012 B1G Leaders Division Champion' trophy will look good in the WHAC ;)

Just Win Baby. Trophies are for 8 yr old soccer tykes. If Bucks run the table everyone in the B1G will know who the true champions are.
