Would you have gone to these lengths in your CURRENT financial situation?

She was running the office because the boss was out of town, and had vacation time accrued but he woudlnt let her take it.


Well......from my experiences in employment it can be harder to take vacation time on a moment's notice. I have done it before, but also have had it denied without much notice.
Maybe she would have been better served to have brought this up earlier to say there is a possibility that she may want/need it off.

I know that I have done that over the years.....put a notice that I may need a vacation time/days at a certain time depending on what all was goin on.


Imagine they are well off enough to do this...but man....its pretty damned difficult to throw away the job for a LL game.

I don't care if I was broke, I wouldn't miss a single one of my son's games. If it cost me my job, so be it.

Something tells me this wasn't the only thing on the boss' mind when he fired her.

If it was the sole reason for her firing, it does suck, although if she didn't give enough notice I have no problem with the company denying her request.

When our son was that age, we could not have afforded for either of us to lose our job. Sometimes putting family first would involve not doing what we'd want to do.

Both options have pros and cons and neither is the per se correct answer.

I am not a parent but I would have a tough time choosing work over family in almost any situation.

Side note: My boss is a moron. Every time I tell him I am going to use a vacation day his first response is "Well when were you going to tell me?". Uh...I am telling you right now...?

I told him almost four months in advance that I would need three days off for a cruise and he still had that same question.

Many times the stories are deeper than what is stated and I bet there was more to it than just what is reported.

My parents went to most of my games growing up, but there were times they couldnt because of work and it was never that big of a deal.

I guess for me, it's because I know what it's like to not have a father attend any of your events because he worked all the time. So it's an easy decision for me.

I agree, a game here and there isn't a big deal I'm sure, but it's the Little League World Series. Not exactly "just another game".

Obviously every situation is different, but I'd have to agree with this. Like others said, maybe they were well off and will be fine without the job. However sometimes, doing the right thing IS going to work so you don't get the power shut off and lose the house. The kid may not understand it at that age, but they will when they get older.

I'm pretty sure though at 12 years old though, if one of my parents said "I can either come to your game and get fired, or watch it on TV and keep my job", I'd tell them to stay home.

I agree with this, Its not like it was a random league game, Its the LLWS, No guarantee Your getting back to it, I would gladly lose My job to see My kid play in it

The story doesn't provide enough to make a judgment one way or the other, the issue with her mother is weird and if anything leads me to believe she's a drama queen and is just pimping the story for notoriety. In the article very little of it makes sense. She can pre-order flights (including a return flight) but isn't able to book a car on AVIS? Weird.

My girlfriends mom was told she would be fired if she missed work for the birth of her first grandchild. Then her husband who is a labor lawyer pretty much told them he would shut them down if they tried to do that. She works for a mid sized company that some how doesn't have an employee handbook stating their time off policy's. She now takes as many days off as she wants but only gets three weeks paid each year.

I know if it would have came down to it she woulda choose to see her first grandchild. They are lucky enough to not relally need her salary she only works for the healthcare.

The part of the story about paying the cabbie $400 to haul her to Williamsport shows the kind of dedication and initiative any employer would want their employees to have...this chick will have a job within the week.

If that is true, the crux of the story is that she still owes $150, which sounds like begging for money which I'm sure people will provide. If the story was about getting to Williamsport that shouldn't be relevant given that she flew her mother and back from Philly.

I could be wrong, but my spider-sense says this is a scam for money.
