and it was refreshingly aweseom...

Last sat night was at my nephew's birthday party.

16-18 adults, 15 or so kids.

NOT once did I see someone get out their cell phone to text, or call, or play games, or check facebook or ANYTHING like that. No video games, no PSP's...nothing.
Not once.

Everyone actually was either sitting around talking, or playing some sort of game, and just enjoying themselves like we woulda been 10 years ago.

To NOT see everyone with their heads down into some sort of electronic device was something that I really missed.

Too many times that is all you see.....people playing on their damned phones or game things.

I know..cool story.....

The absolute worst is seeing a couple at a restaurant both looking at their phone.

Interesting that they call it "social networking" when it's rather anti-social (or at least, impersonal) interaction.

Seriously though, my SIX YEAR OLD son was asking me when he was getting a cell phone because his friend Cody has a cell phone and Cody is younger than him. I got my first cell phone when I was 18 and I paid for it myself.

I told him to "fuck off to his room and go play with play dough." He responded with a "what the fuck is play dough." Fucking kids.

The last part didn't happen QUITE like that.

I hate how much I am on the phone/computer and am trying to be more aware of that as of late! Especially when we are out to eat and such but it has turned into routine and you don't really notice it until something is said. Sad really but that is now the world we live in!

If I am in a small group or 1-1 with someone and they are unnecessarily text for a while. Ill send them a text with a smartass comment. Usually gets the point across.

It's no more antisocial and impersonal than when people wrote or typed letters to correspond.

Very true. I think the difference is the frequency and the replacement of personal communications that has taken place.

It's a different kind of communication. There are less interpersonal skills used and less face to face interaction. Too much exclusive use of electronic information dehumanises what is a very, very important part of community life and living together.

I think you have mistakenly labeled the ADDITION of communication means as REPLACEMENT of the existing communication means.

I visit and call from my house, my mom, who lives 2.5 hrs away, the same amount as I did 15 years ago. However, additionally, I text her and video chat. I also can call her when I'm AWAY from home now because I have a mobile phone, where as before I did not.

The same is true of kids today. They still see their friends at school and interact the same as they did twenty years ago. They still hang out after school and at social events; movies, football games, etc. However, in ADDITION to that, they call, text and facebook/internet chat during that time and in the later hours. Twenty years ago, that extra communication in the later hours did not exist; other than via telephone.
