I was going through some old football preview magazines the other day, and in the 2003 Athlon Sports Big Ten Magazine, they had a little section called Xtra Points. In this section they had different subjects with different headings. Under the, "And you were thinking....WHAT?" Technically, the suspension DID NOT take effect until Jan. 13th, the first day of spring semester. So technically, Phillips was eligible to play in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1st, which he did. But ethically, was it the right thing to do?

According to AD Tim Curley, just because Phillips had been expelled from school was not enough reason to remove him from the football team.

Penn State President Graham Spanier disagreed. Dr. Spanier seemed to have this silly notion that guys who have been kicked out of school on charges of sexual assault, probably aren't the best people to represent Penn State.

"My own view is that students should not be allowed to participate in university activities in such circumstances", he said. The sound you just heard was that of Curley and Paterno getting their wrists slapped.
