I had about 1/2 a practice with my high school girls and I'd hit a ball to RF or RCF in bloop area and had a line of players practicing how far they could get off on each play and still get back safely....had the outfielder throw it every time trying to get the out to show that hardly anyone was getting off far enough.
Yes, in softball the first base coaches are so worried that they will forget and go, they tell them to tag up, instead of getting off far enough that they can just get back if it is caught, and be that much ahead if it falls in. Another common mistake I've seen in softball, more than a couple times is when there is a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out, and the batter hits a line shot right at an outfielder, and the strong inclination is to head straight for home, and the coaches don't realize it quickly enough to yell to get them back and they lose the run because they can't get back to 3rd in time to make it home! I know that cost Marietta a loss in a tourney game in extra innings by not getting a run they should have gotten easily on that exact thing.
