Few days ago the wife finally agreed “we have to much shit” after months of conversation about all this stuff. Time we start to get rid of stuff and stop buying more stuff the reality sunk in. :)
Four bedrooms filled still with the girls stuff, plus basement, attic, family room and four more rooms filled with painting, pottery, brass, wreaths, trunks, grand piano, lamps, knickknacks and antique furniture (can’t sit on), the list is never ending.. Where do we start?????

Time to down size …. possessions

We figure this would be best before anything happen to one of us and the girls are left with the task of getting rid of this stuff. We started asking the girls what they want or not.
Wife planning a garage sale for some of the junk and Ebay for some of the better crap…
But first we have to find a starting point. As we started, I ask the wife what about this? Holding up a Blue Hand Blown Glass Vase we got at the Ann Arbor Art Festival in 1974. Great piece of artwork do we need it? ……her comment, I really like it and it has memories… Honey we where stoned at the time and for 38 years nothing has ever gone into it…. it is baggage. I can tell now this will not go well… or easy or quickly or be a smooth process..

Have any of you had to deal with this with your parents and or are there some other OC individual thinking down sizing also?

Yes I have dealt with it and its a rough thing to do. To determine what is important family item and what is just something to do with out is difficult. We pretty much have it all settled now. It took almost two years to sort everything out.

Whew! I was missing my daily dose of Belly thread.

Thank God.

Yes, we need to downsize at the BRF household and it will be tough.

Bro you just bought that house not to long ago...

We're not selling the house just the stuff inside and all the worthless stuff we have gathered over the years..

No this is my wifes house she bought before we got married. Trying to sell so we don't have to put a rental in the neighborhood.

Yup. Set up at the community garage sale in town, with prices marked dirt cheap for a lot of gardening stuff. Parents good antiques went to Garth's in Delaware.

Great auction house if you have any fine art or antiques to sell.

We use a good rule when it comes to getting rid of stuff, if it has not been purchased or has not been used in the past 12 months, it is gone.

12 months isn't a very long time. I used a mitre saw for the first time in 3 years a few weeks ago. There's stuff you need that you don't use very often.

My father was a depression era child. He threw nothing away that "might" have a future use. I still think I have buckets of hardware in labeled cans in his garage....along with one and two man sickles for clearing the fields.

I don't use that rule in my workshop, but I do use everything in there at least one a year. I will say that the rule should also apply to wives and girlfriends, no need to keep them around if you haven't used them in the past year.
