Unlike Phelps in '08, Lochte's going to be remembered for the races he lost while leading, instead of for the race(s?) he won.

for all NBC has been trying to sell the competition between Phelps and Lochte, it's been disappointing so far.

I'd be surprised if Phelps is beat in the 200 fly. This is his bread and butter event. Just because he wasn't fastest going into finals doesn't mean much. There is no way in hell he doesn't medal, but he should still be the gold favorite.

Missy Franklin showed she's going to be a force for years to come, qualifying in the 200Free and then 20 minutes later winning gold in the 100 Back was no easy feat. That takes Phelpsian type talent and resolve.

Lochte is definitely showing he's no Phelps. He's a good swimmer, but he's not in the same conversation as Phelps. Even though they are the same age, they are at different stages in their careers. Phelps "big show" was Beijing after doing amazing in Greece. This was supposed to be Lochte's big show, and he just hasn't delivered. Phelps is more or less on a farewell tour. He put in effort while training, just not the same that he did for previous Olympics.

I think this should also put in perspective how amazing what Phelps did not only in Beijing but Athens as well truly was.

100 Back Gold-Silver 1-2 punch was no surprise. Nick Thoman has been a great backstroker for quite a while. He was just behind Peirsol and Grevers previously. I believe he holds the World Record in short course meters for the 100 Back. But congratulations to a kid from Cincinnati, Ohio (Mariemont HS) for winning a silver medal!

http://www.toledoblade.com/Olympics/2012/07/30/Matt-Grevers-sets-Olympic-record-to-win-100-back.html
LONDON — Matt Grevers collected his first individual gold medal on Monday when he led an American one-two in the final of the men’s 100 meter backstroke at the London Olympics.
Using every inch of his 6-foot-8 frame, Grevers stretched his long arms out to win in a time of 52.16 seconds, a new Olympic record and just 0.22 outside the world record set by Aaron Peirsol.
American Nick Thoman finished second in 52.92 while Japan’s Ryosuke Irie got the bronze medal.
Grevers is the latest in a long line of great American backstrokers, but like his predecessors, he had to bide his time, serving as the understudy to Peirsol before his retirement.
Grevers won two relay gold medals and a silver in the 100 at the last Olympics but this was the first time he climbed the top step of the podium alone.
