So I decided to start next year's gardening season early and am going to try my hand at composting. I drilled 1-1/4" holes three rows deep in a large industrial garbage can. I am planning on filling it with grass clippings, old leaves, some top soil and earthworms. I will keep it moist so the elements will break down and next spring I will have a rich soil base for my vegetables to flourish in.

Tell me what I did right or what I am doing wrong.

You are going to need more holes. You need air circulation for it to compost.

This person knows his compost. Seriously, a lot more holes. Maybe add some meshing to the inside of the container to help with air circulation.
