Been a stressful past week for me. Saturday my dad tells my sisters and I that he filed bankruptcy on everything he owns. That a house on five acres and two hay fields about 40 acres each. We were completely taken by surprise seeing he owes nothing except like five years of a house payment. He had a stroke and a heart attack about five years ago and has early stages of Alzheimers. Went to my lawyer today and he said we would have to prove hes incompetent and hopefully he is not that far into the bankruptcy. Went to his doctor today and discussed with him what was going on and he said he could give us the paperwork we need.

Just a little pissed off about the whole situation. I moved in a few years ago to help with him. I sold my house and gave up a lot to do this. Seems like everything is just unreal right now. He almost caught the house on fire eight times by cooking and a new habit he recently picked up smoking. My sisters says its all my fault cause I was suppose to be looking after him. So I guess I really dropped the ball on this one.

I wouldn't say it is all your fault, if yor father hid some details from you I can't see you taking the blame for this one.

Anyway, hope all works out for the best.

If I were in that situation, and my sisters told me that, they would never want to talk to me again after I was done saying what I wanted to say. Sounds like you gave up alot to help out your dad. You need to get him to give you PoA over his affairs, if he is no condition to make sound decisions.

That sucks. I'd tell your sisters to fuck themselves. If your dad had early Alzeimers, watching him can be basically a full-time job because, well, if they don't know how their brain is working, how the hell can any one other person? I know when my father started getting it, before my mom had to put him in a nursing home, she was to the point where she was nervous about leaving the house for any length of time because she wouldn't know if he'd decide to "go for a walk" and wind up just going down the road to wherever. And if he's at the stage where he's accidentally entering "firestarter" mode while cooking food, he probably is at the phase where he needs someone to watch him pretty much constantly.

It's a shitty situation...I just don't think you should be made a scapegoat for things that go wrong. People with Alzheimers probably need professional care. One non-professional person who has their own stuff they need to do isn't going to be enough unless they drop everything and revolve their whole life around doing that.

I agree with those that say your sisters should "get bent." That's a lot of responsibility to put on one person and it sounds like you've made major sacrifices. Hope everything turns out well.

I'm not happy with my sisters at all. I worked full time up until February when my job was terminated been taking classes to get some certifications I need to further my worth as an employee and working construction on the side. Watching dad dont bug me its just one of those things maybe Im trying to do to much. The lawyer said he should know more in a few days. after I dropped the paperwork off from the docs he said as long as the bankruptcy wasnt to far along everything should be fine. I guess ranting to a bunch of people on a message board aint the best thing to be doing though.

I'd tell your sisters if they don't like how you've been doing things then they can feel free to step up and do them better. And kiss your ass.

A lot of times people think they shouldn't get involved in their aging parent's finances so as to not look "greedy". And here is an example of what can happen.

I like you, mcburg, and wish you well. Do what was suggested and see if you can get POA. Then you can deal with your ungrateful sisters.

mcburg, don't sweat it. If you haven't moved out, its not too late to fix it. Especially if you already have a liar/lawyer working on it.
