Any advice on areas to stay? Family is in the early stages of planning a visit probably next summer.

More than likely 6 adults and 3 kids under 7.

Close to beach & activities is a plus.

I'm sure every area has good & bad, just looking for a family-friendly area more than anything.

Hilton Head is like a big foot with different Plantation area. We stay in the Sea Pine, Ship Yard or Palmetto Dunes area.
Sea Pine has lot of comdos that on the beach face or side veiw of the Ocean. I like the Ship Yard area best more beach and more shops within walking distance.



In the Palmetto Dunes area you can rent a beach house which is cool we done that also.. and many times that sleep 10 or 12 people

It cool unless a big storm rolls in and the wave crash on the wall 30 feet from the siding glass doors... little freaky for a Ohio people..

Best piece of advice, either arrive early morning or late evening. As depicted in the photo, there is one road in, and one road out. You don't want to be stuck in traffic for hours w/ 3 kids under the age of 7. This is only true if you're going during peak season, mid-june through August.

On Sunday you can take a free guided tour of Parris Island Marine Corps training facility just a few minutes away. Sounds kind of boring but it is interesting.

3 Friday mornings a month they graduate a battalion too, well worth seeing.

True that :laugh: But you can stop at the OutLets on the way in and get that frustration over early on your vacation :D

Anywhere you are going to eat, get there early and allow for plenty of time to find parking. The island is VERY congested. Sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes to find parking if you are eating anywhere around the Sea Pines area (where the light house is).

Ive been to HHI twice. Not impressed with either trip. Beaches are crowded, roads are congested, golf courses over priced (especially if playing at Harbour Town). If we ever go back, I would opt to stay on Daufuskie Island where it is more isolated and relaxing. Paying $ to go through the Sea Pines resort to eat, driving around forever trying to find a parking place through congested traffic and having tons of people at each beach is not my idea of a relaxing vacation at the beach.

Maybe there is a more private area other than Daufuskie on the main island?

Crowds are why we go to Holden Beach. We rent an Oceanfront house, and basically everyone sticks to the beach right in front of the house. We know where the public accesses are, so make sure we stay away from those. The last thing I want to do on vacation is waste time dealing with crowds.

get the sea bass ... freakin awesome

We stay at our friends condo on Folly Field--less crowded, and easy access to stores, restaurants, etc.
