I said this to many the last time I bought a new car (Ford Focus as I drive 40+ miles each way to work).

People were asking "you drive so far, why not get a hybrid" to which my answer was "because I'm not retarded and can do the math".

A little snippet....

"If you take two similar, even identical models, one a hybrid, one not, for the Ford Fusion, for example, you're paying a $5,000 premium up front, versus a non-hybrid," explains Shaiken. "Going forward, it could take 8 to10 years to make up that savings. If you only plan to keep the car for 6 or 8 years, you are not going to see it. People are thinking twice about that kind of a decision."

Yeah, I've always wondered the same thing. I couldn't see the benefit in spending so much more up front to make it worth it.

Gay. It is ridiculous the difference in prices in different car models. "Go ahead and upgrade to the Limited Edition. It has an extra upholder, for only $1250 more!"

Hybrids are a great idea....but not worth the extra money.

Same with electric cars.

With electric cars, I would assume the increased cost in electricity would offset the gas savings?

Hell, just the increased sticker price over the gas cars offsets the savings.

When I figured my Focus I would have to drive a Prius for 200,000 miles before the difference in price is made up in gas (at $3.50/gal gas).

However, since I get the employee discount that became 400,000 miles before the difference is made up.

That doesn't include the extra cost of repairs for hybrids over traditional cars which would skew the numbers even more in favor of traditional cars.

I'm all for energy conservation, I drive a Focus instead of a F150, but it has to make financial sense as well.
