About 49% of Americans say they aren't contributing to any retirement plan, according to a new survey conducted by LIMRA, a trade association for the financial services industry.

Is there anyone who still thinks the US won't completely implode on itself?

Why should we save when we're going to have social security?

Then they shouldn't expect me to take care of them when they can't work anymore. How ignorant are people?

If you are under 50, you won't have social security. These people are going to have no money to live on after they retire. They will take more money from the responsible people that actually saved by raising taxes.

It's seriously a joke.

I have a built in retirement system in my job. My wife has zero, and we pay for zero.

That's insane. We have 2 401k's, 2 IRA's and a savings account and we're 90% sure that won't be enough to retire when we'd like to. I'm not sure how you can sleep at night when you don't have anything. Who the fuck want's to work forever?

Doesn't matter. The government will take it. There's no point in saving anyway. By saving and sacrificing in the short term to only get to the long term and have your wealth confiscated by those who never sacrificed, you would be a moron.

I've dropped my personal savings rate to the lowest ever(about 35%) and probably will drop that even lower as time goes on.

1. If you believe SS is enough to live on...lol.
2. If you believe SS will be around forever...lol.
3. If you are being sarcastic...kudos.

If you aren't saving 10-20% of your income for retirement then your kids better be ready to take care of you when you can't work...or get used to greeting people at Walmart.

Definitely not a more important issue. It is, however, a lot easier to "fix".

Sure you can! Just tell them to stop being gay and to start being straight. Works every time!

49% is an interesting number. Makes me think of a similar number I've heard. Makes me think if I don't like paying taxes then the answer is not to save any money.

Good correlation!

However, you know the libs will spin it that "well the rich have the ability to save and the poor can't afford it!"

I don't buy it by the way, I have steadily put away a minimum of 10% my whole working career, even when I was 17 at my first job. My parents instilled in me a financial standard of 10% to savings, 10% to church/charity, 25% the government takes, and you live on the other 55%.

Even when I was below the poverty level in college I saved around 10% in an IRA.

Absolutely. I have a life instance policy through my employer too, you can cash in on that as well.
