Looks like the Cards #8 hole hitter exhausted Cueto's in in the 3rd inning by having a 14 pitch AB that resulted in the 2nd out with no one on. Then the pitcher singles, Furcal triples, and Jay HRs before Johnny can stop the bleeding.

But the Reds go to work for a while in their half of the inning to score one and have the tying runs in scoring position with none out, but Ludwick and Bruce, both apparently situational hitting challenged strike out leaving Cairo to try and pick them up with two out RBIS, but he failed also leaving the score at 3-1.

Game now going to the 9th at 3-3. Reds tie it with two in the 5th, thanks to the tying run coming in on a Valdez two out bunt after another AB failure to get a runner in from 3rd with less than two out, this time the failure was Cairo's.

Chapman faces 7 batters: 1h, 5 k's

And only hit 97 like 5 times. Controlling things soooo much better

Dusty fails.

Gambles w/ Bruce and loses. 2 on, 0 out to start the 9th and unable to win? We'll see, but that's on the manager...

Bruce is a very good hitter but he went against the percentages against a bad match-up with the lefty.

Praise Chris Heisey. Reds win 4-3.

Fortunately, Heisey excelled in his best role (pinch-hitter) today and the Reds were able to salvage one in this series.

Are you saying you pinch hit for Bruce??

I know the season is early and it is waayyy to early to pull the "must win" card, but I hope this win helps the Reds build some momentum going forward. Starting out what is expected to be a banner year 2-4 (and getting swept by the defending champs) is a good way to put a damper on any optimism had before the season started.

Chapman just looked filthy again today... Really wish we could see him as a starter

You bunt. Bruce isn't above bunting. Ludwick is the clean-up hitter and he would have bunted...

Then again, Ludwick IS a good bunter. The Cards are familiar with him. Made perfect sense to walk him, especially with the lefty already out there.

Chapman with his 2nd two inning walk off win! I hope Heisey's GWH was a more clear cut hit than Rolen's routine grounder was!

It was a line drive to the gap, Ludwick would have scored from first if he needed to.

I don't blame Dusty for letting Bruce swing away in the last inning. I know there's 2 on and 0 out and a perfect time to bunt the guy over to third...but Bruce has only a couple sacrifice bunts in the last few years, so I would let one of my better hitters try to win it with a base hit. I know it didn't work out, but it's a risk you have to take once in a while, luckily Heisey was able to end it with a walk-off.

It was a COLD day out at the ballpark today. But what a game to see.

Despite Berkman, Beltran, and Freese sitting out, this was a good win for the Reds. They needed to avoid the sweep, and did a good job rebounding after the Cards went up 3-0 early.

I was just glad the Cardinals didn't hit a homerun in the first inning today.

On to Washington. The bats better wake up for this series, or it could be ugly.

I wouldn't say it was a solid win will all those Cards out and only winning 4-3, and taking 9 at bats do it when you have the same number of EBH, but get 14 hits and 4 walks to 8 hits and 2 walks, and fail three times to get a runner in from 3rd with less than two outs. Just doesn't seem solid to me.

Reds didn't play their normal lineup either.

Yes, but they got 14 hits and 4 walks, and two of the 3 who failed to get runs in were normal.

And still won.
