How hard would it be to put in a rating system for posters. Like after each post you have an option to give it a positive or negative rating... it would be a disincentive for trolling and would help encourage intelligent posts as the majority of people are generally looking for some kind of positive affirmation no matter what kind of social setting they are in (including message boards). Yes, there will still be trolls, but their rating would tank and people would notice that everyone else agrees with their opinion about certain posters and start to ignore them when everyone realizes no one takes them seriously.
That was kind of a long ramble... I hope it makes sense.

The software has a rating system built in, I just turned it off shortly after getting this place up and running. I wouldn't be opposed to turning it back on.

I think it'd be nice, kind of like a modified Digg sort of thing.

As a, I guess, connoisseur of internet forums, I can tell you that no one pays attention to thread ratings., and if they do, all they do is bitch about people giving them bad ratings.

I'm not talking about thread ratings... I'm talking about a personal rating that is permanent. Each time a poster get rated or positive or negative it adds to their cumulative score and it just keeps building.
Every post won't be rated... but when someone has an exceptionally bad or good post people tend to notice those.
We could make an announcement saying how we are trying out something new and want to see if people like it or not. If it is having the desired effect. Basically just say it is a trial and not permanent, unless it works out how we want it to.

Ah, we have those on CR, most people just use it to piss others off. We call it the "rep meter".Fly4Fun wrote: I'm not talking about thread ratings... The only thing I worry about is if the users can see who left the negative rep. I can see that leading to a lot of pissing matches.

Well, on CR you can kind of tell. People with under 500 posts can't actually post rep, so it comes out gray. The one on mine that says "-Ken" is fake, because Ken has 1500 posts. So people will do stupid shit like that. I mean, I really don't think it will help anything. I know on CR it hasn't changed anyone's posting patterns or any arguments.justincredible wrote: The only thing I worry about is if the users can see who left the negative rep. Ya, I definitely could see people using it negatively... which is why I just want to try it out for a bit. Would there be ways to create limitations... such as a required number of posts to use the system. Or if a person has a rating himself of such a negative number they aren't allowed to rate others negatively... just to keep the usual negative posters from trying to bring people down to their level.
I'm just tossing out ideas here.

I don't see a problem in using it, just from having experiences with the system, it doesn't really solve any troll problems.
The only good I have ever seen come from it, is on CR we have a noob forum, and you have to get 10 positive rep net in order to post on the for sale forums

self deprecation is never a bad way to go.
