Just trying to get some opinions on how the IT job market is in Columbus. I'll be out of the Navy in 2 years, I know it's far, but it'll go by fast. Just trying to see if I want to move back to Ohio or not. Never lived or worked in Cbus so I don't know much about the area. I'll have my Masters in Cyber Security and Information Assurance within the year. I'm just trying to compare Columbus with possibly staying in San Diego area and considering Pittsburgh also.

If I were in your situation I wouldn't limit my job search to just a few locations.

Well I want to move closer to home. Not a fan of Cleveland area. By that time I'll probably have a 2 year old so unless the hubby stays in looks like we won't be staying in San Diego. Well I have IT experience in security admin and system admin. Probably the areas I like. Also have an option to go back to school to become a Physical Therapist. Thinking that one through also.

DSCC

They have a really hard time hiring qualified IT people with security clearance. Plus your time in ups your tenure there.

No shit but San Diego also is hard to get a job because of the amount of retired military or former military there.

I would definitely look at jobs in higher education IT departments. It's sometimes like a revolving door at some institutions. But, it seems to me that higher education institutions really have those jobs open all the time. You could even make some additional money by teaching some courses in IT at some institutions.

Unlike someone else, I won't discourage you from seeking out jobs in particular locations. If you want to be somewhere, try for it. Nothing wrong with that. As long as you understand it may limit you from making as much as you can OR really getting the job you really want to get -- but you probably do understand that.

Your math/timeline is a little fuzzy. Are you pregnant now and about to deliver any day or are you adopting?

Well I have about 2 1/2 years left in the Navy but I'll actually get about 3 months of time off before my enlistment is up.

No I have no desire. If I could advance I would but my job we have little advancement all the way up because of people not getting out of the military due to the shitty economy. Plus I'd make way more money I already have 7 years IT experience and 6 years military when I get out with a Top Secret clearance I should have no problem getting a job.

Yeah, you would get hired on as an 11 or 12 at DSCC with absolutely no problem. So that means ~60-70k/year.

A friend of mine works there and they are literally begging anyone with clearance to come work there.

Well I'm just asking about the area. I don't know much about it and I'm not saying I'll have no problem it's just they put it in our heads that have a TS clearance almost guarantees you a job on the outside.

Defense Supply Center Columbus. DFAS and DLA are there. The main IT may fall under DLA

Its right by the airport. Some extra perks there would be a pretty decent gym and a pool to swim in.

So let me get this straight, you're from Ohio, living in SD. You have credentials to get a job, not worried about a job, etc.. Yet make a thread to ask about the job prospects in Columbus; "trying to get some opinions on how the IT job market is in Columbus" then say you're not asking about the job market? Instead asking about the city, on an Ohio forum. lolfail, IPOTW.

Can't even get your facts straight.

And a golf course which doesn't allow the public anymore.

I've been looking. It boils down to three types of jobs:

1. Developer jobs -- developing some vague system. Jobs are typically high-paying.
2. Help desk jobs -- shit work for shit pay
3. Occasional departmental IT jobs for OK pay.

Hospitals aren't a bad place to look, either.
