this is considered a part of hockey and looked upon as a good thing, but if this happened in the nba all the players would all be called a bunch of thugs and barbarians

btw I thought this was awesome, just wondering why there is a double standard

Because in hockey, penalties reduce the numbers of players on the ice and a 'mutual fight' will drop each team by one. Since the 'speed' of a hockey game increases with fewer players on the ice, it's beneficial to try and get to 4-on-4. So, there's never been a desire to institute automatic ejections for fighting.
The NBA just does foul shots that doesn't accomplish anything in terms of really changing the game much then a few points to either side. It, therefore, cannot be mutual. Fighting in the NBA serves no purpose, then.

the only sports you cant fight in are the predominantly black ones. i get the rules for hockey and why its allowed but your example doesnt take into account the disproportionate amount of the suspension you would get in nfl/nba for a simple fight.Sykotyk;1122001 wrote:Because in hockey, penalties reduce the numbers of players on the ice and a 'mutual fight' will drop each team by one. Because in basketball the fans are on the sidelines and are privy to any violence - see the Pistons/Pacers fight in '04. How many times has a hockey fight erupted with a professional climbing the glass? A few times, with nothing happening.
Thank Ron Artest for this.

Apparently you don't get the definition of a few times - that was chump change compared to the Pistons/Pacers fight. That was the worst brawl in the stands in sports history. There were innocent people being accosted that had nothing to do with the soda thrown at Artest. And its exacerbated by the fact that he could have called security that would have walked him off the court.
Very weak sauce.

I was more responding to your assertion that "nothing happened". Definitely when the '79 Bruins went into the stands, something happened.Manhattan Buckeye;1122019 wrote:Apparently you don't get the definition of a few times - that was chump change compared to the Pistons/Pacers fight. imo, its because it isnt against the rules. In the NBA, they are actively breaking the rules by fighting. (In NHL, it isnt...I guess it is technically, since they get a penalty, but you get my point).

that's completely false - fighting majors don't put teams a man down.Sykotyk;1122001 wrote:Because in hockey, penalties reduce the numbers of players on the ice and a 'mutual fight' will drop each team by one. Also, instigating can get you ejected and adds an addition minor penalty.

Agreed, but at least the innocent people had a head start while the Bruins were climbing the glass. Artest and company could have easily severely hurt a random spectator. Thankfully, no one was, but it shouldn't be tolerated.gorocks99;1122021 wrote:I was more responding to your assertion that "nothing happened". On grantland they had a write up on this - one player said if Jermaine O'Neal didn't slip throwing a punch he probably would've killed the guy he was trying to hit. He really thought Jermaine would've put the guy in critical condition if he hit him full force.Manhattan Buckeye;1122025 wrote:Agreed, but at least the innocent people had a head start while the Bruins were climbing the glass. BTW, the answer that probably won't satisfy everyone but is (IMO) the correct one is "because its been a part of the game since its inception." It was written into the rule book in formally in 1922 that fighting would result in a 5-minute major penalty, but had been a part of the game in Canada for years before.

The short answer is - because its part of the game
The long answer is - stop trying to bring race into everything.

In one sport, it's "legal" to fight.Gblock;1122006 wrote:the only sports you cant fight in are the predominantly black ones. i get the rules for hockey and why its allowed but your example doesnt take into account the disproportionate amount of the suspension you would get in nfl/nba for a simple fight.
In the others, it's not.
Why is that so hard? It has NOTHING to do with race.

The correct answer is that the NBA sucks.
