I saw this headline and while it is a no brainer with the advent of the internet, it made me a bit nostalgic for my youth as I remember getting a set of encyclodpeidas in grade school and that was where you found information about stuff before the internet.

It's a different world now, but 244 years is a long time so its kind of sad in a way. First edition was released in 1768. The United States was still but a glimmer in the eyes of the founders.

They will however continue with online editions and such, so it is not totally over for them.

I remember having a few of these as well when I was a kid. Sad they are doing away with the printed copies but it makes sense.

Considering they have not sold an entire set since 1998, it's about time.

It is totally over for them. Wikipedia has made them useless.

And before anyone says "but you can't cite Wikipedia in research"...try citing Britannica for a real research paper and see if you don't get laughed at/marks off. That's not what they're for.

Yeah, but everybody knows not to actually cite Wikipedia, but instead the sources linked to the wikipedia article.

Also, fuck Britannica.

Yup, sadly not everybody knows this.

I thought "hey, might be cool to own a whole set of the last print edition" then I saw that it was $1400. Fuck that.

Yikes.

I have two sets from when I was a kid. Not entirely sure who made them though. I loved them when I was a kid, but I can't tell you the last time I opened one of them.

I remember as a kid sitting there for hours just reading through these. Kind of sad to see them go, but not at all surprising.
