Our family just started this a few years ago. I think a lot of the White Elephant parties are usually gag gifts, but we bring real presents. I always bring something Christmas related.

We do this as well. I haven't picked mine out yet. I was looking for some ideas for something clever and funny yet practical.

Snuggies would be good...something in a really loud print, or a team that you know the person hates.

These are fun but I was involved in one once where some people brought gag gifts and some brought legit gifts...it was just weird.

I always think that it's best when some people bring gag gifts and others bring legit ones. Some people leave really happy and others end up disappointing. I always think these are best when you work in teams too. Like whenever we'd do them at church my family would always work together so that we could get as many of the things we wanted as possible. So I may end up with what my dad wanted, and my mom may end up with what I wanted, etc.

Our youth group does this every year and we require that you either re-gift something from home or buy something under $5. We've had some good ones. One year a girl brought an old set of pom-poms, we've had people bring toy wild-west sets (gun, hand cuffs, spurs), gift cards, candles, ninja turtles pajamas, matchbox cars, and homemade items as well. The thing with white elephant is that you never quite know what's going to go over well and what isn't. Sometimes you bring something as a gag gift and people find it funny and everyone wants it. Other times you bring what you think is a really good gift and it never gets stolen. So you never quite know. If you do bring a gag gift, make it something funny that people may try and steal.

Last year I brought all the makings for Washington Apples. All the alcoholics were fighting for it, because it was one of the few practical gifts.

No matter if gag or legit always have the rule the next person to open can trade for something already opened and the first person to open gets "last trades". Draw names for order of opening. This always ends in some good fights which are even better if everyone is drunk.

Booze is always good. We usually have a 25 dollar limit on the game and one year my cousin brought a case of Bud Light and 10 lottery tickets and wrapped them up. I stole the present from my dad and then he stole it from me. Won 50 bucks on the lotto tickets.

Yeah, I think we all understand how a white elephant works, he was just looking for some good gift ideas for one.

Take empty vodka bottle. Fill with water. Tie bow around top so you can't tell it's been opened. Watch everyone fight over vodka when in reality, its just water. Cruel but awesome.
