She was for several years the only congressperson to have an active duty spouse and has been recognized as a longtime supporert of veterans and veteran issues. The support of veterans issues alone is enough to have her recognized by the Navy but I'm sure it didn't hurt that her husband was so accomplished.

Her Husband is a Naval Captain, Naval Pilot and NASA astronaut.

This from the IAVA Member Veterans shortly after Congresswoman Giffords was shot....

"... This past year, Giffords authored six critical bills addressing veterans’ transition home, mental health, housing for military families and upgrades to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Recently, Congresswoman Giffords introduced two key bills to fund scholarships for mental health professionals serving at Vet Centers and expand DoD/VA grants for nonprofits supporting active duty service members and their families...."

Right, but military spouses should be recognized for their efforts too. A military spouse is a thankless job.

they were married in 2007....he flew 2 shuttle missions after that and his role in the navy was probably minimal due to being in nasa. i wouldnt say she was much of a military spouse.

I was a bit surprised last night when I heard this as well. I thought that maybe there was more to the story as to why so I refrained from forming an opinion until I found out more.

It does seem kind of odd to have one named after her, that is for sure. I would think there are many more people who were much more deserving to have a ship named after her.

I have empathy for the woman because she was shot and suffered profound brain trauma.

All that being said, Gabby Giffords has been a pawn to Barack Obama, the Democrats and the MSM. The media used her as the face of that tragedy on that day in an effort to blame it all on the Tea Party and Sarah Palin. Later, when the issue was boiling with the debt limit, Congresswoman Giffords was put on display coming back to the Conress floor in courageous fashion. It all makes me sick.

Yea, no biggie from me.
It's a ship name, small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

Ehh, whatever.

That's true but they have no idea what really goes on during deployments and I feel bad for them. Let's just put it this way I'd never marry a Navy guy. Not saying all Navy guys but I'd say 80% are POS.

All of the other forums are bullshit by nature/design. Politics is generally actually serious, and the petty shit whined over makes for great entertainment, especially drunk

She is being recognized by the Navy for the work she has done for veterans benefits and as a legislator who was supportive of the military.

Still total BS. There are a lot more deserving people. I had never heard of her prior to being shot and I follow politics pretty closely.
