Crean was first asked about his assistant coaches and what their roles are.


“I think when you get to the game and you get out there at early at Indiana, you don’t see our (assistants) hob-nobbing with national media members and sitting on the sideline and relaxing,” Crean said. “We don’t have a team of guys that are out wearing their Beats headphones as they’re warming up. Our guys are out there working with them. I don’t have a group of guys that are grandstanders, that are looking to get an article done about them. I’ve got a group of guys that are really, really hungry to make the team better. That’s game night.”


He went on to say that the assistants help a lot with the scout, and obviously with recruiting. He then went back on attack mode and said he only had one problem with his staff.

“Our coaches, they’re very tolerant, and sometimes I don’t like that,” Crean said. “They’re tolerant of some of the things we see in recruiting. They’re tolerant of some of the negativity. They’re tolerant of some of the grandstand assistant coaches that run their mouth constantly against us in recruiting and want to talk about development, yet they’re the guys that are cheerleading and hob-nobbing and all of those kinda things. It’s about making your players better, and I don’t think there’s any question whatsoever that our coaches are making our players better. … I’m not good with silver spoon coaches. I’m not good with male models. I’m not good with guys who need to have a lot said and written about ‘em. I’m good with guys that roll up their sleeves and get to work. I think that’s what we’ve got.”.......................................


99% certain that these comments are directed at Ohio State/ Boals. So what if OSU's style is to have players wear headphones during shootaround? Isn't practice the time for intense coaching, not shootaround? So what if Boals is personable and is comfortable talking to media personalities and the like? Personally, I think it is awesome that Boals is energetic, outgoing, active on Twitter, etc. Worry about your own staff and quit making anonymous accusations that just come off as sour grapes. Whiner!!!

Boals probably tells recruits the truth and Crean doesn't like it. You should want to go to Ohio State, because.....better head coach, better facilites, better program. Ohio State has 4 Big Ten titles since Matta has been at Ohio State, more than any other school. Indiana has none.

Do I like IU? Hell no. Am I glad they are having success THIS year? Yes.

From this year on, since they have tasted success already, there ARE NO MORE EXCUSES. I'm one that respects the IU tradition, but it's time for Crean to show if he can do it. He has many doubters across the country. People who questioned his rebuild at IU. Those people have been silenced and eaten some crow this year. However, the job isn't complete until it's consistent. We'll see if it will be...

Im pretty sure Boals has done some dirty/negative recruiting with regards to Indiana and he didnt like it. I know a rumor was going around that Jeremy Hollowell had a visit to OSU and Boals talked bad about Indiana and Crean, as well as the players Crean had coming in with Hollowell (should he go). Jeremy leaked this info (supposedly) which is just retarded. But it is what it is. I guess he said stuff that Jeremy obviously didnt like.

But dont be so sure this isnt about other people. The question was posed about the roll his assistants have played this year, and he responded. I dont now if you all know this, but Roshown McLeod was negatively recruiting against Indiana, who he worked for. Crean found out, was obviously furious, and fired the douche. He is the reason why Kyrie Irving, who essentially was committed to Indiana, ended up at Duke. It was all about McLeod doing his work and pushing Irving to Duke and away from Indiana.

Then you have the whole fiasco about the Baylor staff telling Hanner Perea if he went to Indiana and not Baylor they would have him deported. Crean has a reason to be testy if someone is doing the types of things like these. I think something Boals did rubbed him the wrong way, but I doubt what was said on the radio show was directed at Boals directly. I was listening. It started out as if he was talking about his own assistants buying into him and unlike McLeod. Then it kind of got into assitants who seem bigger than the team (Boals???) but it ended with him really upset about something in the past. Id put money he is talking about the Baylor staff.

For the record, I wish Crean didnt wear his emotions on his sleeve like this. He comes across really lame and in poor taste. But oh well, I dont think this is as big a deal as will be made out to be.

Never said that. But I know he has never threatened to have a kid deported lol. I also know no coach would be too happy about his own assistant pushing a kid away from his school to his Alma Mater. I dont know what Boals did, but kids have negative recruiting all the time...for Hollowell to say something in public, I dunno. Im making guesses here, but it had to be worse than what any other coach had said. He said it before he was committed anywhere, so it wasnt like he went to Crean and said "Jeff Boals said this about you."

As far as taking care of his own...he has. 2012 and 2014 have NCAA Title potential. 2013 has B1G potential and is a great compliment to 12 and 14. 2011 had Zeller. It isnt like the negative recruiting has hurt him, but it obviously has crossed the line (Baylor) and maybe...I really dunno, Boals did as well with something similar.

Who knows who he was talking about. Boals? Maybe it was. Recruiting? Its cut throat. But if you are doing negative type of recruiting, I believe most know that can come back to bite you, big time. You never know what a kid is thinking or leaning sometimes. You say something negative about the place he loves, I'd like to think there is enough common sense to know that will get back there. So I'd like to believe coaches no better than to get into the negative aspect of recruiting, too much. I have personally been around kids being recruited. Never once has the coaches/asst. coaches ever said anything negative, nor did the kids come back and say they said anything negative. Wasn't OSU/IU, so who knows.
Again, I think Crean is a FINE coach. He has turned the corner. But I don't care for his "whinning", which he does constantly. I also don't care for some of the things he such as this.

Was this directed at OSU? Who knows. But if some/many of you recall, he short armed Matta big time after the game last year. So maybe there was some substance as far as who this was directed at.

I agree. I dont like some of the reactions he has during games, almost looks like he is either constipated, wanting to cry, or just in total disbelief of what he just say (and that goes for when good stuff happens to IU).


It took awhile for him to get this thing rebuilt. He was really behind the 8ball with the punishment IU received from that jerkoff Sampson. He was down to absolutely no talent and then when he gets a big time player, he got hurt badly in consecutive seasons and it was a setback.

As far as negative recruiting...I imagine all places do it a bit, but you can rest assured some do it worse than others. I could see someone from OSU attacking IU pretty harshly when it comes to recruits. They have more to negatively bash on when a team is down and under sanctions.

LIke Hoke responded when he was asked if they will use negative tactics vs OSU...'if you have to talk negative about other places then that means you dont have enough positives in your own program'.


IU isnt quite there yet, but they are coming along and with some good cllasses supposedly coming along they need to sustain and improve on what they build. I look for this team to lose steam down the stretch and maybe win one game in the NCAA tourney

...and what does doing something at IU have to do with talking? Who cares if he hasnt done anything at IU. He made the Final Four at Marquette, are we now discounting stuff he did elsewhere? Is he less qualified to call someone out?


Now, I agree he needs to keep some stuff under wraps a little bit more, especially regarding what assistants do on gameday and what players do in walk-through/pre-game. I mean, who gives a fuck about that. But negative recruiting is a shady tactic, imo, when it crosses the line. Baylors did, McLoed did (on his own damn team) and if Boals did that Im glad he is getting called out, just wish it wasnt by a coach and instead by the press (Like Baylor and McLeod were) because as you all agreed.
