I agree on this being an example of arrogance. The crane operator is a cocky SOB for thinking he can just drop that puppy in there onto the platform without the help of the guys on the ground with the guide ropes. Based on the picture in your article, that's what it looks like he'd intended to do though. Fortunately the rope guys don't take no for an answer and they did their work anyway.
