I got an old Iphone 3g from a friend and am attempting to jailbreak and unlock for use in India next month.

As I go through I see the firmware version is 4.3.3
This firmware has been most attributed to the 3gs not the standard 3g.
Does that firmware sound unusual to anyone else? If I go back and look for an original .ipsw they all indicate 3gs and not the 3g.

I am not concerned with bricking it or anything, I am just trying to see if there is a way to unlock it for use abroad.
Help

already have an iPhone with a service plan,

this is an old phone that will be used in another country. There is no illegal action in stripping the baseband and purchasing a sim card from a carrier abroad.

Also, thanks for the link Hoops. I will watch it and see how that goes. I have a suspicion that the phone pictured is a 3gs and not a 3g. We will see if it pans out.

You do know that jailbreaking doesn't mean downloading apps for free right? You can only download apps for free if you download the section within Cydia that allows you to do so.

Jailbreaking just allows you more custimization with your phone. Creating UI hacks, etc... It's not just about downloading free apps, as I said, that's only a small part of it.
