Well, another season is upon us. I just looked back and I have been doing the sectional rankings since the 2006-2007 season on most sites and since 2004 on at least one. Man time flies
.
Here are some things to note before looking at these rankings. I usually don't post until after all the holiday tournaments are over (after New Year's). The reasons are fairly clear: Getting results for some of the teams is almost impossible, the weights are going to change for many wrestlers and some team line-ups will change quite a bit before February. Keep this in mind, help me with results I don't have and all input will be greatly appreciated. Shoot me a PM if you want things kept private. Don't be too rough on me, it's early in the season!
As always, i do these rankings not for the upper echelon wrestlers (they are listed in the statewide rankings, of which their are many good lists to look at). Also to help the parents, fans and coaches get an idea of who's out there.
These are for the young men who bust their butts without much recognition as much as the top 4. That is why any wrestler who catches my eye will usually at least get mentioned. I will do these pre-Christmas rankings, do another after the Holiday tournaments, another after the Top Gun, Dies and other Mid January tournaments. After that I will probably do one the 1st week of February and a final before the sectional.
Well here goes nothing.
2011-2012 Hoover D2 Sectional Rankings. 12-20-11
Teams-Akron N, Buchtel, Canton S, Coventry, Fairless, Hoban, Kenmore, NW, Norton, Springfield, SVSM, Triway
Let's take a look at the teams.
Similar to last season, I look for this to be a two horse race. Last season Coventry won the team race (249-186) by shear numbers and that could be the case this year as well. The Comets return eight district qualifiers (they would have more, but I have no results for several, don't know if they will be back later in the season). SVSM has much more top end firepower (they outscored the Comets 119.5 to 50 at Firestone). The Irish return five DQ's and have added a few tough freshmen to their line up. Their win in the Solon Comet Classic attests to that. I look for a closer finish this season. Once again Canton South should be in third. Triway has been added to this sectional and they have several top notch grapplers.
Let's take a look at the weights. Coventry (as always) starts many wrestlers early in the season. From 132 to 160, I have at least three wrestlers with results in those weights. Some have four, which makes for a tough call to get the actual #1 right. As stated above, i know many of these wrestlers will switch classes and they will be adjusted as the season progresses. I'll give a short history of the ranked and any tournament finishes or matches of note. Some weights I don't have many results. That's where your input will help out a lot.
106
1-Chell (SVSM) 2-Williams (Buchtel) 3-Norman (Kenmore)
I definitely know there are more wrestlers out there. i have some results but not many wins are in them. Chell is one of the incoming freshman for SVSM. His 3rd place finish at Solon puts him in the drivers seat at this time. Maybe a 113 will drop, that remains to be seen. Williams won the Canton S duals and Norman placed 5th at the Kalin invitational.
113
1-Schoeppner Canton S) 2-Fagan (Coventry) 3-Huber (Hoban) 4-Cox (Buchtel)
Schoepner is the best here. He's coming off of a State 4th place finish (along with a sectional and district championship over the eventual state champ (who is at 120). He has placed 1st at the Canton S Duals, Cuyahoga Hts and 2nd at Hoover. Fagan won 33 matches last season. He's had a rough start to the season but is next here. Huber was injured early in the season. I don't know the extent of his injury. Cox finished 2nd at Canton S
120
1-Rix (SVSM) 2-Shields (Coventry) 3-Catlett (Canton S) 4-White (Buchtel) 5-Waddle (NW) 6-Stuteville (Kenmore)
Rix is a returning state champ and two time placer (4th in 2010). He took third at Solon (losing to Lake Catholics Tutulo) and lost quickly at Ironman. As with Schoeppner, he is a huge favorite. I had a lot of trouble with the next two. Shields is a returning DQ (112), while Catlett has a 1st at Canton S and 4th at Cuyahoga Hts. White placed 3rd at Canton S, Waddle 4th at Cambridge and Stuteville 6th at Kalin.
126
1-Gunter (Coventry) 2-Gibson (SVSM) 3-Hamm (Triway) 4-Smith (Norton) 5-D Herron (Canton S) 6-Rowe (Fairless) also Parle (Kenmore) Strobelt (Buchtel)
I had a problem deciding 1st here. Gibson qualified to Columbus last season, while Gunter was a district 6th. Gunter beat Gibson here early in the tournament last season by major decision. Gibson finished 2nd at Solon and I have Gunter still unbeaten (could be wrong as I don't have every dual result). Should be a great battle if both stay at this weight. If this weight stays like this, the last two district places will be hard earned. Hamm was a D-3 district placer (6th) last season. He finished 1st at the Wayne Invite, beating Rowe 6-3 in the finals. Smith was a district placer (6th-112). Parle finished 4th at Kalin and Strobelt, 3rd at Canton S)
132
1-Skonieczny (SVSM) 2-Smith (NW) 3-Lake (Coventry) 4-Casper (Fairless) 5-Kiner (Triway) 6-Harvey/Williamson (Kenmore) also Dolph (Canton S)
Skonieczny is the third Irish grappler. I have #1 (could be 4) out of the first five weights. The lower and upper weights have to carry the load for them to win this sectional team title. I am starting to re think my above projection. He is a returning state 8th place finisher and is having a good early season (2nd at Solon). The rest of the field is behind him. Smith finished 1st at Cambridge and has real come into his own this season. It should be a dog fight for the lower two qualifying places.
138
1-K Harris (NW) 2-Cropper (Coventry) 3-J Harris (Canton S) 4-Fletcher (Triway) 5-King (Fairless) 6-Farmer (Norton) also Lyons (Kenmore)
This a deep weight class. There is not much (if any) space between the first two. Both have lost a close match to Coblenz (Lake), Harris 3-2 and Cropper 3-0. Harris has wrestled much of the early season at 145-152 with good results, finishing 3rd at Cambridge. If I'm not mistaken, he beat Belknap (145 #1) at the Marlington duals. After these two, J Harris finished 2nd at Canton S and fourth at Cuyahoga Hts, Fletcher 5th at Smithville (beating King twice) and King 6th at Smithville. Farmer is a returning DQ and Lyons finished 2nd at the Kalin Invitational.
145
1-Belknap (Hoban) 2-Shephard (Fairless) 3-Hartley (Coventry) 4-Easton (Kenmore) 5-Wyant (Canton S)
Belknap is a returning district placer (6th-135). He finished 4th at Hudson. Shepard and Hartley finished 1-2 here last season at 140. Shepard finished 4th at the Wayne Invitational, while Easton took 1st at the Kalin and is also a returning DQ. Wyant finished fourth at Canton South.
.

152
1-Rang (Coventry) 2-Sovocool (SVSM) 3-Schondel (Hoban) 4-Wilson (Buchtel) 5-J Herron (Canton S) 6-King (NW) also Overstreet/Perkins (Kenmore)
Rang is a two time DQ and I'm going with the senior over the freshman. Sovocoool ended up 3rd at Solon but didn't wrestle at Ironman. I think these two are a cut above the others. Schondel was a district qualifier last season at this weight, but failed to place at Hudson. Wilson and Herron finished 2nd and third at Canton S respectively. Overstreet finished 3rd at the Kalin Invite while Perkins did not place at the Wayne Invite at this weight (he is a returning DQ). Not sure who will man this weight for the Cardinals.
160
1-Mongold (Coventry) 2-Carr (Springfield) 3-Dyer (Norton) 4-Parmer (Kenmore)
Mongold was a DQ in 2010 at 125. He is one of the middleweights for Coventry that gets shuffled around every dual meet, but I have lots of good results. If I'm not mistaken, Carr was injured much of (if not all) of last season. I am going out on a limb with him because of good reports I have gotten from people in the know. I have seen Dyer and he is a battler. Parmer finished 6th at the Kalin invite.
171
1-Ayers (NW) 2-Willoughby (Kenmore) 3-Wikles (Buchtel) 4-Edgell (Canton S)
Ayers was a district qualifier at 145 last season. Willoughby placed third at the Kalin Invite, Wikles 3rd at Canton S and Edgell was a sectional 6th last season.
Looks like we could see movement to either of the last two weights. I'm searching for names though.
182
1-Adkins (SVSM) 2-Rutherford (Norton) 3-Miller (Akron N) 4-Mays (Kenmore)
Adkins is looking real tough here. After winning this sectional at 171 in 2011, he was a Firestone Placer (6th) as a freshman. He has placed third at Solon and 7th at Ironman (no small feat) this season. Looks like his main competition will be from another underclassman. Rutherford was a Jr High runner up at 220 last season. I saw him early and he lost, but I saw the potential. He just finished 2nd at Hudson to a very tough Walker (Copley). Miller seems to start slow every year, but is a returning Hoover runnerup (171), great to see North with a few tough wrestlers. Mays took 6th at the Kalin.
195
1-Zody (Triway) 2-Headrick (Coventry) 3-Hunt (Canton S) 4-Yoder (Fairless) 5-Murgatroyd (NW) 6-Painter (Kenmore)
This is actually a tough weight to guess on. Zody is a returning state qualifier (D-3) with over 40 wins last season. He won the Wayne Invitational this year as is looking real tough. Headrick has wrestled at 182. Coventry seems to always have a tweener (what weight should he go) at these mid heavy classes. Headrick placed at Firestone at 160 (6th) last season and is looking real good. I know coach Shinn looks at the big picture (COLUMBUS) when figuring what weight his wrestlers will end up at. Hunt seems to have progressed immensely from last season. He is a 2X DQ but I was really impressed with results this season. A 7-2 win over Thomas (Marlington) and first at Canton s, 2nd at Cuyahoga Hts..I may be undervaluing Yoder. He is a tough kid and finished 2nd here last year to Lockhart. Murgatroyd has returned to the mats after an hiatus. I have results for him from the 2009 season, nothing after that until recently. Painter didn't place at Wayne but sneaked in a 6th at Kalin.
220
1-Stone (SVSM) 2-Vinson (Kenmore) 3-Wadkins (Triway) 4-Washington (Hoban) 5-Haramis (Norton) 6-Parsons (Canton S) also Neloms (Buchtel)
Now we get to my favorite two weights. Most who read my rankings know that my son was a pretty good 189-215 and started at OU for 3 years. Don't know where the kid got his size but he now is a solid 325, no more goofing around with him for me. Enough of that, back to the subject at hand:
Stone is the favorite hear and has looked great this season. He finished 1st at Solon, but suffered an injury at Ironman (broken hand I have heard). Hopefully he will recover and be back this season. Vinson is a returning state alternate and finished 1st at the Kalin Invitational. Wadkins was a state qualifier (D-3) and has done well this season. He finished 2nd at Smithville. Washington is a returning DQ and placed 6th at Hudson (where Haramis didn't place). Looking at the brackets though, the latter two are very close. Parsons finished 3rd at Canton South and 4th at Cuyahoga Hts. Neloms was 4th at Canton S.
285
1-Hodge (Canton S) 2-Gosnell (Coventry) 3-Brumley (SVSM) 4-Cox (NW) 5-Fields (Kenmore) 6-Glas (Norton) also Harris (Buchtel)
This sectional always seems to produce a quality 285. Lugo, Rutherford and Bass and Betz are state placers or qualifiers that come to mind. Shouldn't be any different this year, although I look for the Alliance district to be crowded at this weight.
Hodge is a returning DQ with finishes of 4th at Hoover and 1st at Cambridge and Cuyahoga Hts.. Gosnell is also a returning DQ. I may have Brumley too low, but a freshman at this weight will have a tough row to hoe. He did finish 3rd at Solon.
Cox has a 1st at Cambridge and lost two close matches before the placement round at Hoover. Field is a returning DQ and placed 4th at the Kalin. Glas placed 5th at Hudson and Harris 3rd at Canton S.
Time for some local duals to help sort things out after the holiday tournament season.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!! Look back after the 1st for the next installment and as always
Good Luck to all wrestlers!!

Looks like we could see movement to either of the last two weights. I'm searching for names though.
