I had a conversation with a teacher and coach (non football) from John Glen High School in New Concord last week. He teaches a class that teaches speed and strength, said they lift, plyometrics, and speed train every day. This class is part of the curriculum there and all athletes take the class to satisfy their PE credits. It made me wonder how many schools in Wayne County offer such a class? And if they don't offer it, what impact would it gave on their sports programs if they did?

Your thoughts?

I do not know specifics, but Waynedale does offer a weight training class in addition to PE.

I have been thinking lately and believe it is time this summer before the start of two-a-days and the real WCAL chat to begin to host an event. I am thinking of "An Evening with The Commish". Probably have a social hour, dinner, drinks then a brief video presentation outlining the life and times of The Commish. I believe everyone will have a greater appreciation of my role. There will also be an opportunity for photos with me and a brief autograph session.

I am thinking of venues, Coccia House, or the WCC come to mind immediately. I can walk home from WCC and beast is in his element there, so that is the front runner right now. However, I am sure they have a no jorts rule, and I want this to be open to every one (even luckydog).

Everyone will be invited including ts1227, but his moderator powers will be null and void at this event. If all goes well, there will be a lot of cursing at this event, and no one should receive an infraction for this.

If I could get a preliminary head count as soon as possible I would appreciate it.

This class seems more sports specific than just weight training. I would love to see this put in place in this area.

Believe it or not... this is in my wheel house.
This is a nice idea, but I believe they are on a block schedule. I don't think any of the H.S. in this area are on block. So you're looking at around 90 min periods at JG. If you do not have this type of time it would not work. You would be very pressed for time especially when it would have to be open to non-athletes as well. (Academics and fairness come first in the school... remember). What I have observed is that when you mix athletes with other students, the athletes tend to screw around more than the others and the non-athletes are usually the only ones to make gains once they choose to quit worrying how much they do compared to the athletes. It's kinda of a strange and perceived "non-norm" phenomenon when looking at it from a sociology standpoint. Much of that might have to do with the athletes doing these exercises throughout the summer and then having practice later in the day and so on... (lots of excuses used here typically)

Something that is done in Texas that would be nice to have here. (Will never work in Ohio... we pay to play and B and Moan about the 3% of the budget an athletics office takes up for a typical Ohio school) They have the last period of the day reserved for "extra-curricular" class. (Band goes to band practice, football players do lifting/speed workout, choir to choir, yearbook... so on...) It is a 60 min block and when done the teams go on to their normal practice of game plan/film/drills... so on... They only stay after school for about an hour/hour and half.

Overall I'm not sure it would have much impact in performance. How much has it helped JG? I don't think a lot really. They are comparable in size and area to the schools here. Kids are going to work as hard as they do now though no matter when you choose to do the work. Waynedale has focused on speed training/plyos and what not already. I'm sure the other schools do as well.

All that is nice too, but IMO... I think they are focusing too much on these extra things like speed training. It's not what the kids really want and at their age of physical development I'm not sure this type of training is as beneficial as it is at the collegiate/pro level. You're upper level kids with potential and desire to play at the next level could have more focus on this area, but I'd place more emphasis on strength and flexibility at this stage. As a coach of schools our size and mentalities.... YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOLID DEPTH! You need to raise the middle more and most of our middle kids need to work more on Str/flex IMO.

my 2 cents-

I like the idea, make it mandatory and everyday for everyone. Bloodys actually right about to many obese kids. Thats gotta change and programs like this could help.

as far as impact on the sports programs, I think jmars right. It will help the non athletes more.

Jocks will look at it as "more exercise" and take it less seriously......but a kid who was never that athletically inclined may benefit greatly from watching his speed times fall and his

strength numbers rise over the course of a nine week period. (in other words competing against himself rather than others)
