Time Warner Internet question

The situation I am currently in with obtaining internet is really a struggle. I live in a guest house type of deal, not far from where the "main" house is located. To get internet now, we have a Netgear Range Extender about halfway between the house(which is where the modem and wireless router are located) and guest house to give us some type of signal. The problem is it is very slow and the connection is spotty at best.

The question I have is or would it be possible for Time Warner to come out and install a separate cable modem out in the guest house? We get basic cable out there and everything it would just be nice if I could get some internet speed faster than 1 MB download.

I think that'd be possible, but I don't work for Time Warner so maybe you should give them a ring.

Hope this helps.

I imagine it would be possible. Is the Basic Cable in your name ?

I know for a fact that yes we would but we would charge you for another rr account. Can do it for 29.99 for a year for standard though

Alright that is what I thought, just wanted to make sure. And no the account is not in my name, it is in the owner of the house name. But I'm sure they could just add another account under their name and they can just tack it onto the rent we pay.

why not just run a hardline from the TWC modem to your place instead of using wireless?

Because that would require roughly 300 ft ethernet cable running from inside their house, through the yard, and then into our house. Could do it, but wouldn't be very practical.

guest house? sounds like you live in a barn!

if i am looking at the right stuff, you can get like 1,000ft of cable for just over $100. maybe through in a little PVC pipe and it might be worth it over the long run.

Funny but actually true. It is a barn lol, just "house-like" in the inside.

From my experience, good luck with anything Time Warner. You live in a guest house, do you have your own address? When moving to my current house, TW wouldn't set up my cable or internet because the last person to live here (months before I moved in) never canceled their plan. Had to call the company I rent through to get a hold of the prior tenant to get him to cancel his plan.

That would be pretty slow. Long stretches of networking cable don't really work out that great.

Buy better network equipment and place it in a better spot.

I don't think this should be a problem for TWC to come out to install a new modem since the cable wiring is already in place. I guess it depends on who did the wiring and the quality of the work.

I think the biggest obstacle will not be having your own address.

Just buy some high gain antennas and beam it. Old satellite dishes work well if you know what you're doing.

Use google.

For 300ft you wouldn't need to do any crazy antenna setup with dishes.

True. But he wouldn't need to call Road Runner either.

Maybe so, but since he can't get his current setup to work correctly, maybe paying RR for a new install is his best bet. I wouldn't do it but I also know how to setup a wireless network.
