Coolest Chant In The Country began at Navy. Who knew?

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/39091/coolest-chant-in-the-country-began-at-navy
"...I've seen it before, but never in such high video quality, not until the tremendous MileHighMids passed it along on Twitter. It's everything a basketball chant should be: Organized, direct, supportive, intimidating and not the least bit hokey. It's not cocky, either; when I hear "believe," I hear less expectation than faith. That's what sports fandom is. It's a form of faith...."
"...In October, the Midshipmen were in the last minutes of a 28-25 win over Air Force, then ranked No. 25. Navy hadn't beaten a ranked opponent in 18 years -- longer than some Mids had been alive. Yet some in the Brigade, which stands throughout every game, began jumping up and down at FedEx Field. "I," they chanted softly, then louder, "I believe . . ."
Sources say a group of Navy lacrosse players started the ruckus, though you can't be sure because urban legends are quickly springing up around Johnson's 7-4 team.
"I believe that," they yelled as more joined in. "I believe that we . . ." Until finally, the whole Brigade, more than 2,000 strong, was bounding up and down, screaming, "I believe that we will. ... I believe that we will win!" ..."

Like their head coach, Stew Morrill, the fans at Utah State are some of the most under-appreciated in the country. I have to admit, I haven't heard the Crazies in Cameron do anything remotely close to as cool as either of the above Utah State videos for a long while, if ever. The students in Provo have my admiration.
I mean, Morrill hasn't won anything less than 23 games with the Aggies in 12 years. That's exceedingly impressive.

Yeah, Utah State didn't invent either of those, but the massive amount of students make them awe inspiring.

Was it Ottawa-Glandorf?
O-G had a cheer a few years back -- they've probably always had it, but I remember it at its strongest during the Dave Sweet and Pollitz brothers' days' -- that went something like, "Ohhhh-Geeee Ohhhhh-Geeee, O-G H-S" in a booming reverberation that sounded like a train was running through Bowling Green's Anderson Arena. The Titan faithful are the most resounding fans I've ever heard in the state of Ohio (minus the Cincinnati boys catholic schools) during my time following the boy's state basketball tournament. A couple other notables are Poland Seminary and Elyria Catholic.

Sounds like something out of South Bend. I believe that we will win, and then reality hits and they lose.

Paul Johnson coached at Navy from 2002-2007. It had to be early in his career based on the not beating a ranked opponent comment. It's a little bit more than 3 years ago.Laley23;984581 wrote:When is that little passage about Navy from? I heard that "I believe that we...." chant at a HS game 3 years ago.

After some inquiry with some of my Mids contacts I have learned that it was originally derived from a Paul Johnson interview. He was asked why he would leave GA Southern (with all his success there) to go to Navy, a team that had won only a couple games over the last several years. He replied that if he did not believe that Navy could win, he wouldn't have taken the job.
...and thus, in the Air Force game, they started the cheer, "I believe that we will win".

Makes sense. I wasnt sure based on the quotes you had. That is pretty cool, I like the chant a lot when done properly.Con_Alma;984664 wrote:Paul Johnson coached at Navy from 2002-2007.
