Anyone else here fans of Mastodon? They have to be one of (if not the most) influential metal/prog/hard rock bands the last 10 years. Their new CD came out about 2 months ago and its great. Its definitely not heavier or more technical than previous albums, but it has some very unusual (awesome) songs.

Plus, how could a CD be bad when the cover is a handmade wood carving this sweet?

No Clue. It was posted on the band's facebook page today. But these guys are goofy as hell, and having this crazy picture is something they would consider "normal".

They're not bad, but not even close to being one of the most influential prog/metal/rock bands of the last decade IMO.

you're hilariously wrong. you may not like them, but as you've probably learned your opinion doesn't mean a whole lot.

their first album comes in at #19.

LOL, right. And your opinion and that joke of a link has an opinion that is right? Opeth at #3 on that list? That is a joke, I saw Opeth when they opened for Dream Theater. Opeth sucks.

As I said, Mastadon is good, but not even close to being the most influential.

I think the opinion of professional reviewers probably can have the most say.

I like Dream Theater as much as anyone else, but if you compare the reviews of Mastodon's new CD to Dream Theater's new CD, Mastodon's had just as good if not better reviews.

The point is, you are sounding like Sleeper posting in a Notre Dame thread.

Fail. I haven't knocked Mastodon at all, I just said they are not the most influential band of the last decade. Not sure why you and tcarrier are getting so bent out of shape. You can like them and say you like them better than Dream Theater. And it may be true that their last album received better reviews than Dream Theater's last album, but they aren't the most influential band of the past decade. Maybe they will be in the next decade.

i was referring to the critical response that their albums get
The "sludge/stoner/alternative metal outfit" Mastodon, as labelled by Allmusic, is "one of the preeminent metal acts of the early 21st century".[SUP][52][/SUP]BBC stated about Mastodon: "They might be bonkers of lyric, full of fantasy mumbo jumbo, but the band is unashamedly committed to its complex-of-composition craft, and the results have frequently stunned ever since their 2002 debut, Remission. They are the most ambitious, most fearless, most fun heavy metal band to have breached the mainstream since the genre oozed its way out of the Midlands in the 1970s."[SUP][53][/SUP]
Alternative Press has stated: "Mastodon are one of the all-time great hard-rock groups."[SUP][54][/SUP]
An article in the April 2009 issue of Rolling Stone stated that "Mastodon are the greatest metal band of their generation - no one else comes close."

Mastodon's real good. They're no Dream Theater when it comes to prog metal, but no one is. NO FUCKING ONE!
