I was driving through Amish country within the past couple of weeks and I thought about a questions I've always had about the Amish. I understand that part of their tradition is to not use many of the modern conveniences and technology of the world. However, the state of their lifestyle and technology was once considered modern and leading edge. So why did they pick that point in time to baseline their use of technology and what not. It seems as though a lot of the things they utilize are representative of th 17th-19th centuries. But compared to hunter/gatherer days, 17th-19th century technologies and methodologies were very modern.

I'm just curious about this. Anyone who knows a lot about Amish tradions that can shed some light?

That was meant as a joke.

1_beast, and others will know what I'm talking about. Long story, from a long time back, from a long forgotten site.

An old jj thread I am guessing. Well if someone knows about this question, I'd be curious. I don't know much at all about the Amish.

In 1656 the Amish were considered "cutting edge".

W
hat I found interesting about the Amish is I assumed the Mennonite decided to split from the Amish because they wanted a little more modern technology, but the opposite is true. The Mennonite wanted less tech, but the people who started the Amish thought they hadn't gone far enough so they split off and went a little farther.

There are so many different "sects" within the Amish people. It really depends on which "group" believes.

Where I grew up, the Amish use the bare minimum. They are poor as can be. They still only bathe once a week (I believe). They are completely different than any Amish that are in Holmes County (and surrounding Amish Country).

There's really no overriding brush you can paint the Amish with, beside the fact that they are minimalists.

Amish have the largest ad's in newspapers for those fake wood heaters. Do Amish even read newspapers?

Tangent (and a true story): a guy at my old work in Manhattan, when called into a staff meeting on September 11, 2011, finds out about the attacks on the trade center, DC and a field in Pennsylvania. His response in front of a room full of co-workers (no lie): "Those bastards are after the Amish!"

My old president tried to keep a straight face on such a horrible day, but he still talks about that moment from time to time.
