It's hard to tell from 1 episode, but this one seemed to focus a little more on the main character than Deadwood, which followed a bunch of different people/storylines about equally.
I enjoyed it though. Looks like a winner to me.

Deadwood was a let down for me.
Hell on Wheels started great though. AMC definitely pushes the envelope in terms of content.

Watched the premier and will continue to watch. My only problem is that half the time I couldn't understand what the characters were mumbling.
