Hmmm... Not sure about being better than the 2006 team. I love the strides Prather has made, but that '06 offense was unreal. Our defense is much better this year than it was in '06, but I'm not sure that gap makes up for the gap between this year's offense and the '06 offense.

This week goes a long way to tell us where this team ranks in the annals of the Saccoccia era, but that 2006 team won a state title. This team has to at least do that first before I begin comparing the two.

I'll breakdown Mooney a bit to actually add something to this thread.

Mooney is typical Mooney in a lot of senses. They have an athletic QB in PJ Quinn who is a threat to run the ball, but is probably is the best throwing QB Mooney has seen in at least a decade. So while McCarthy-led Mooney teams (and their successors in recent years) were mainly a threat to run with a pass 2 or 3 times a game just to catch the defense off guard, PJ Quinn would have no problem throwing it on every down if he really had to. Speaking of the Brothers McCarthy, Quinn is probably the best decision maker at QB since those two. Mostly knowing when to hand the ball off and when to tuck it and run on the QB option reads. He is by no means as athletic and quick as the McCarthys or DJK, but he gets the job done.

The Cards will mostly line up either under center or in a pistol formation with 2 backs behind the QB, but tend to vary the formations with upbacks, TEs, and RBs in a variety of positions in the backfield.

Carrying the load in the backfield is a trio of backs led by senior RB Roosevelt Griffin who has rushed for nearly 1000 of Mooney's 3700+ rushing yards in 2011. The deceivingly small and quick Justus Ellis-Moore and the athletic Marcus McWilson share the load and have contributed along with Quinn to the Cards' ample rushing yards.

What can really be said about Mooney's defense? Its a Mooney defense. A dominant defensive line, athletic linebackers, and defensive backs who are fundamentally sound, keep guys in front of them, and rarely give up big plays.

As can be said for a lot of teams, Mooney can win on Friday if they don't turn the ball over and don't give up big plays. I don't see Steubenville scoring a ton of points on this defense and if Big Red's defense is as good as advertised then it may come down to penalties and turnovers. Looking at scores alone, this Big Red defense definitely seems better than 2009 the last time these two teams met, however that Big Red team played a much tougher schedule than this year's team so while I look at Steubenville's scores from this year I tend to start to worry, I also look at the records of those opponents and feel a bit better. The two teams' common opponent may be all we have to go on as far as what to expect on Friday, both games being very close. Big Red beat the Irish by 5, and Mooney lost to them by 4.....sounds to me like we're in for a good game on Friday.

Now would any Steubenville fan care to break down the Big Red and continue rational FOOTBALL discussion instead of everything else that's been going on?

Great info. I think you can plug Steubenville in where you have Mooney and that would describe Big Red. From the QB being very capable to a 3 or 4 headed TB and athletic defense with powerful D-line. It's all the same. This should become about momentum and mistakes because I think these teams are copies of each other. Too bad someone has to lose this early.

We were talking about just defense.

The 06 offense ranks up there with the best Big Red has ever had. 06 special teams were average.

That's what made 05 so great...all 3 phases of the game were outstanding.

Big red likes to come out in various formations (the spread , pistol , two backs, one tight end , traditional i formation). Our qb is average and our main threat in najee murray he can fly by anybody he runs like a 4.3. Our backs are decievingly fast starting wit leshawn luke and jojo pierro. We like to use playaction alot. Our defense is very impressive our dline is good we usually get good pressure but our dbs can be vulnerable as shown last week they dont like to take the ball so if we're not careful we can get burned but we do like to press alot.

Big red however is a penalty plagued team though i believe they had over 5- 10 penalties last week so if it comes down to penalties we might be in trouble.

You know what I think would be pretty cool, especially this year? To see Big Red come out in the Wishbone and run the triple option.
Put Houst at the fullback, Pierro & Glenn the other backs. Maybe even run it out of the Wild Stallion with Najee at the QB position.

Yeah, I actually paused at that too!! I know as a wrestler I'm biased, but for me that title goes to D. "Tubbo" Yetts! I know Zach too excelled at that level in two sports, but wrestling is an entirely different beast! And to compete at a national level on top of that is just crazy.
Zach is up there in the top two or three though(for me)!

Oh, yes... In terms of defense, I would probably rate this squad above the '06 team. Despite a wealth of talent, that defense was not dominating. I guess replacing so many important pieces, especially on the defensive line, took its toll on the 2006 defense.


Good post, Mooney44Cards. My biggest gripe about this particular message board has been the lack of actual football talk and the abundance of meaningless smack talk.

Unfortunately, I've only been able to see Big Red twice this year (Ursuline and Massillon), so it is difficult for me to go into great detail about how the team has grown and where our weak spots are.

One thing that really surprised me from Week 5 to Week 9 was the improvement at the quarterback position. Prather has really come into his own. He looked so much more comfortable in the pocket and going through his reads. You could also see that the coaching staff has gained a lot of confidence in him and they are giving him more options when he drops back to pass.

Our passing game has come a long, LONG way over the course of the last couple of seasons.

Our running game is strong, as usual, with a smallish, quick line. JoJo Pierro and LeShawn Luke can really wear on a defense. We have a homerun hitter with Najee Murray, who will line up all over the field.

It is a good, balanced offense that seems to be getting better and better.

Defensively, this is a team that could make its mark at Big Red, as we have previously discussed in this thread. A lot of it will depend on how well we do in the postseason, obviously, but when we are having conversations about the 2005 team in comparison, you know it has a lot of potential.

William Houst is an absolute monster and Najee is obviously a BCS caliber talent.

Our special teams scare me a bit. We have a pretty good kicker this year who can put the ball in the endzone and also kick an occasional FG (he is money on XPs), but our coverage makes me hold my breath at times. Then again, kick coverage is always a little scary on the high school level, regardless of who you are.

It should be a really interesting game between two programs that know one another well.
