Perhaps. But we don't really know how many people that farm can support. In any environment, there's an optimal, sustainable balance between what can be supported and how many peoou need for the division of labor.
I think the bigger problem is taking in a large group of people you know nothing about can become a threat to your band and your leadership. You'd probably love to join with a group of 20 Rick's, but what if it's a group of 20 Shane's? Their desperation is certainly an indicator they are more likely to be like Shane. If they had something to contribute, something equally worth protecting, they would - like Rick - not be so quick to want to share.
Those guys were scavengers. So unless you're sitting on, well, a huge farm, they're a problem. But I'd have to agree that ultimately you need a militia because there clearly is more threat than just zombies. Why it cracks me up when the old man keeps saying "it's MY farm". So sue me. Call the cops. Tough shit, dude, survival of the fittest.
