After getting off to a 3-0 start, the Quakers lost a heart breaker at home to ECOL rival Cambridge 28-27 in OT on a missed PAT. New Philadelphia has beaten 2 teams with a winning record since last beating Dover in week 10 of 2005. They have the following schedule staring them in the face:
week 5 - v. Canal Fulton Northwest(3-1)
week 6 - @ Coshocton (4-0)
week 7 - v Marietta (1-3)
week 8 - v Zanesville (3-1)
week 9 - @ John Glenn (1-3)
week 10 - @ Dover (3-1)

Looking at this schedule, I see 2 wins and 4 losses, making them 5-5. Can the Quakes do something that they rarely do, and beat 1 (or more) teams with winning records and finish the season over .500 and threaten to make the playoffs in DII region 5?

It's an honest question. I would rather they win 7, 8, 9 games a year and make week 10 that much more exciting. I think they are a year away, and anything better than 5-5 this year means they are really headed in the right direction. But, I see them finishing at 5-5 this year.

Went and watched the Quakes play on Friday night. A couple of thoughts on the boys from New Philadelphia

1 - they are very young at the skill positions on offense, and it definitely shows esp. at QB.
2 - Unless Johnson busts some runs, that offense isn't going to score many points against quality competition. Didn't seem to have much creativity in the offensive game plan, but that could be a result of a sophomore QB. The defense played well, but was on the field most of the night and wore down eventually.
3 - despite being young, they have some talent and could be pretty dangerous w/ experience
4 - Phila hasn't played the quality of program/team as Northwest very often the last decade. Outside of Dover, the Quakers rarely see anyone on their schedule that is a legitimate DIII/DII playoff team. Games like Friday should help them.

Good Assessment. I might add though that the QB had a bad night. He has been better then that and up until Friday had been very accurate. I'm sure he must have had some adrenaline going on and probably some nerves as well. The offense is pretty vanilla and you are probably right about why, they are young.

I can see losses to Coshocton, Z-ville, and Dover.

They should of never lost to Cambridge. I was hoping 7-3 and sneaking into the playoffs, but more than likely its goin to be 5-5.

Typically, they would need to go 9-1 to get in because of a weak schedule. Not sure if it would have been different this year.

John Glenn and Marietta are bad teams. Barberton is below average, West Branch, Cambridge and Wheeling Park are average. Coshocton is very good and Northwest, Dover and Zanesville are great teams. Phila would probablly host a playoff game by winning eight games this year.

I wouldn't put Northwest in the Great catagory just yet. At least not from where I sat Friday night. Not saying they arn't good because they are but great is a bit of a stretch.
