...replacing Derek Shelton.

Good pick.
I like what he did with Marte down in Columbus.
Can he continue it at the major league level?
Can he restore Pronk?
Will he take Peralta to the next level?
Ultimately, he will be judged by whether he succeeds where Shelton failed.

I think Pronk is a lost cause, but I do hope he can improve Peralta and Marte.

Columbus was not a good hitting team last season.

That doesn't really matter in the grand scale of things...newarkcatholicfan wrote: Columbus was not a good hitting team last season.

He DID fix Andy Marte and he obviously has a more fundamental approach to hitting than Derek "We need a homer everytime" Shelton...

I like it because it allows continuity in what is/has been taught throughout the system (and it wasn't all bad), yet it brings a fresh way of teaching it with a different individual's emphasis. Shelton probably wasn't as bad as he was stale.
Columbus may not have been a good hitting team simply because that alot of the best hitters were being bounced around and rotated thru to the varsity.

Whoa, NCF, I just looked at the link for the first time...
How was Columbus NOT a good hitting team?
As a team they hit .275!! That's pretty damn good for a team average!
In fact, they led the International League in batting average, had the FEWEST strikeouts, tied for the most doubles, 1st in hits, 4th in .SLG and 3rd in .OPS...
What exactly where you looking at when you made that comment? Or were you just trying to continue your negative outlook on all things related to the Tribe?

I know the stats have them saved.
Numbers do not always tell the entire story.
You go ahead and think this was a good hire
I will say its not
Time will show the answer.
The team will stink again this season.

It's amazing how old names pop up out of nowhere. I definitely remember Nunnally from the Reds.

LOL. what is the whole story then? If the numbers don't prove it, then I guess you know stuff we don't. Let me guess...privileged information? I forgot you know stuff.newarkcatholicfan wrote: I know the stats have them saved.

It's not like you post opinions against certain teams only to spite them.

Privledge info? No.
I refuse to stoop to the level of those who do nothing but go from post to post acting like a bad ass by throwing out insults and name calling so I will allow time to prove me to be correct again.
Then when it does as you can say I know I read that this would be somewhere.

But that is just dumb. They could hire anybody and he could fail. All they really have are numbers to go by when hiring dont they?newarkcatholicfan wrote: Privledge info? No.

I get that he may fail, but does that mean it was a bad hire at the time? Maybe, but based on numbers it isnt?

The problem I have with posts like this, is that you don't say why. You may be right....but it is just DUMB LUCK unless you back up your opinion with a reason. I'll guarantee you will be right someday...Jon Nunnally will get fired some day... somewhere by somebody...and you will be right...time will prove you correct.
so tell us why hiring Jon sucks?
Odds are you won't.

I do not think his philosophy will be accepted by those guys on the Cleveland roster who seem to think home run first.

Maybe the old hitting coach taught more power? And if that's the case, then there would be a problem with the players not the Coach.newarkcatholicfan wrote: I do not think his philosophy will be accepted by those guys on the Cleveland roster who seem to think home run first.

For those who are going with this being a good move share with everyone why you think as you do.

I'm not sure there are any Home run first hitters...'cept maybe Hafner...and he raves about Nunnally. I think you mean free swinging hitters. Shelton was of the philosophy of hitting the ball hard to all fields...not a bad philosphy per say...except that it appeared that no allowance was made for the situation. The team was terrible at moving runners along and just putting the ball in play to score a run. Shelton also tried to fit every hitter into his mould. Hence , naturally good hitters like Marte and Phillips were stifled while he tried to 'make them better' by forcing them to hit his way.
Nunnally is just the opposite. He is known for being able to look at a hitter, and make them better by making adjustments within the players natural talent.
Phillips, as you probably remember, hit well initially but began to struggle under Shelton's tutelage. He was sent down to refine his swing(hit the ball with power to all fields) where he continued to struggle. Phillips rebelled, having no success in what he was being taught....disregarded his coaches and went back to his old swing where he hit the snot out of the ball in spring training of his option year. Wedge and Co. did not like uncooperative players with an attitude...and traded him even though he was hitting over .300. That was just what BP needed and the rest is history.
I suspect the same is true with Marte...except that Marte did not rebel. I'm really curious to see what he does next year.

I think you summed it up as well, or better than any of the rest of us could have. Nice job. That, and it's kept NCF quiet. I'm all for anything that does that.
