Good read.

The honor code at West Point possesses an admirable directness: "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." ...
...Miami's website says its code "specifically covers four violations": cheating, plagiarism, collusion and academic dishonesty. It goes on to say, "Anyone affiliated with the University, including faculty, teaching assistants, and students, may file a complaint in accordance with this code." Miami athletes are further reminded that they are obligated to follow all laws and rules: the university's, the NCAA's, the state's, and the federal government's.

Notice anything different? No emphasis here on not tolerating others who violate the Miami code—and only a tiny mention that violations "should" be reported. In other words, keep your own nose clean, you're OK.

This is a signal to look the other way. ...

Sorry, but I don't feel it's an ethical or moral violation to tend to one's own yard and leave others' yards to them.

They have different goals for their students so i think it's a stretch to compare the two schools, but i understand the point the writer is making. I do think if a University wants to be respected and among the elite schools in the country they need to hold their students and faculty to higher standard than most.

My view regarding the Honor code isn't about butting into others' business as much as it is assisting in maintaining the integrity of the name on the degree you are seeking.

The students at any other university could learn something from the cadets at USMA not just the canes.

I'd much rather go to Miami than West Point.

Not remotely the same situation. One is preparing kids for the NFL, one is preparing kids to serve in the military. One is a multimillion dollar business where people are fired if they don't achieve success, the other isn't expected to and never will be a title contender.

I have to agree with those that say this is an apples and oranges comparison. Miami football has not and never will attract the same profile as the average cadet at West Point. The two institutions (Miami football as opposed to the entirity of the University of Miami) and West Point serve much different goals. I commend those who attend West Point, but I understand how and why they can be held to a very high standard. Miami football was going after talented, yet often very flawed inner city kids to play football. These weren't kids who were striving for the goals a cadet strives for. This is like comparing the behavior of the Ohio State football fan base in its entirity with the chess club at a private religious school. It's a failed comparison.
