Sad, sad day. RIP John. Any other Lennon fans out there?

He probably had my least favorite solo career out of all of the Beatles (Wellll, except Ringo, though Ringo tried. Oh, did he ever try.), but I think that he actually was killed before he could have the solo impact that I think he would have thrived in. New Wave with John Lennon would have been great. And I could only imagine the kind of songs he'd be writing right now.

I dig the Beatles but John had a bad solo career. Sad that his life was taken though.

Exactly. That's how I found out as well (long before 24 hour news channels, the internet, etc.). While I was a huge Beatles fan, his solo work hadn't really resonanted with me until Double Fantasy and I found I was really enjoying it. A bit less bizarre and more commercially appealing, I guess. Anyway, it was one of the events that actually made me cry when I heard it.gobucks wrote: Yeah i remember howard cosell announcing the news during the monday night football game. Bruce Springsteen played a show in Philly Dec. 9, 1980. He came out on stage and said the following
"It's a hard night to come out and play tonight when so much has been lost. The first record that I ever learned was a record called 'Twist and Shout', and if it wasn't for John Lennon, we'd all be in some place very different tonight. It's an unreasonable world and you have to live with a lot of things that are just unliveable.... and, it's a hard thing to come out and play, but there's just nothing else you can do..." and the band launched into 'Born to Run'

John Lennon is the man. I will be very upset the day Paul dies.

I remember this same thread last year.
Here is a pretty good tribute video, the song is Dakota, by O.A.R. which was written in memory of Lennon

Lennon had so many great songs, it is hard for me to pick a favorite. A list of my favorites would have to include Imagine, Instant Karma and Working Class Hero along with several others.

While I appreciated Lennon's talent and the phenomenon of the Beatles, I was never a huge fan.
Even now when I hear "Imagine" and "So This Is Christmas" I just roll my eyes and turn the dial.
It's a sad state of affairs how he met his demise, but I'm not particularly missing his musical - um- "genius."

Yeah. Sad day in music. I liked the Beatles more than his solo career, but he still had great stuff both with the band and by himself.

I too remember this day, Big Beatles fan! I saw his exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that was moving. Seeing the blood stained clothes and eye glasses made you stop and think about things for a second!

Upper90, I believe Lennon was New Wave before New Wave was New Wave. I'm sure you've heard "Mother," "Cold Turkey" or some of his early stuff with Yoko. Then again, maybe New Wave to you is something different. I always thought of it as a more pop sounding Punk.

Lennon, and the Beatles for that matter, were incredibly overrated. But I do appreciate what they did for music.

Hmmmm.....A very good point, that I suppose I've never considered when listening to songs such as the ones you mentioned.
