Man received his tax refund, Chase takes the money he owes them, issues him a check for the difference, then jails him for attempting to cash the check. Pretty crazy if you ask me.

Got my mortgage through them.

Seems like they probably got more suspicious when he left. That probably raised some red flags as well.

I think that he does have a legit complaint for some legal recourse though. If I was his lawyer I would go for some $$$ that is for sure if all of what is said is true. You only hear his side of it and to be honest I dont trust anyone about anything they say about about any situation unless I know them very well.

SOunds like he got screwed over pretty well though.

At first I thought he sounded like a whiner, but by the time I got to the end of the article I could understand why.
Chase had closed Njoku’s account because of overdrawn checks in the past. The bank deducted $600 to cover what he owed them
I don't have much sympathy for someone who has trouble with a bank when they have $600 in overdraw fees.
Njoku was taken to jail on June 24, 2010, which was a Thursday. The next day, Chase Special Investigations, realized it was a mistake. The check was legitimate. The Investigator called Auburn Police and left a message with the detective handling the case, but it was her day off. So Njoku stayed in jail for the entire weekend. Finally, on Monday, he was released.

Auburn Police Commander Dave Colglazier said Chase could have done a lot more to let them know they’d locked up an innocent man.
How the hell does someone go to jail for 5 days for trying to cash a check that isn't fraudulent? I suppose they were extra suspicious when he had all those over draft fees on his record, but somebody should have made sure they knew what they were doing when they locked him up!
Njoku’s car had been towed from the bank parking lot and his check seized as evidence.

“I had to wait a couple of weeks,” he said, “and my car got sold, auctioned off."

Njoku says he didn’t have the money to pay the impound fees and fines to get his car back before it was sold. He said he also lost his job because he didn’t show up for work while he was in jail.
And then to add insult to injury they sell his fucking car? That's bull shit. IMHO he shouldn't have had to pay any damn fees or fines.

I agree with that, but I don't think anyone questions that the check was legit now. And they towed his car and sold it?

You only hear his side of it because for an entire year Chase ignored the situation. It wasn't until he took legal action that Chase said they were sorry and looking into the incident. There are two links in the article that explain.

All the teller had to do was call and verify the check number with her back office. Problem solved. Dude probably should have left either lol.

There is no debating that no doubt! What we dont know is how he was acting when he was in the bank. I am in a totally different business but do have people try to obtain things through fraud and most times they act very suspicious. If he was acting suspicious, and left, I can see how they would be suspicious but it is something the bank should have EASILY been able to verify ON THE SPOT.

Him being in jail for this is totally BS. and the selling of his car....>BS as well.

The bank should have EASILY been able to figure this out quickly. If I were him...I would sue..and he should win.
