Probably because it was the All Star game. Different era though. Those teams actually really cared who won that game, and took it way more seriously than they do now, even though the all star games recently "count."

Yeah, I am not saying it is dirty, I agree with you. Just providing a reason why one might say it was dirty.
Now, if it happened during the all star games now, I think there would be all kinds of uproar.

Always looked to me that he was going to slide, looked up and saw no where to slide, lost his balance, stumbled and protected himself against the collision that he was going to cause.
