My daughter is turning 1 in August, and I'm thinking of what to get her for her birthday.
My opinion: She is going to get big elaborate toys from both grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. (fake kitchen toy, picnic table) and we have toys all over the place already, so she doesn't need to get a toy from us. So throw some extra money in her 529 plan for her birthday.
Wife's opinion: She has to have something special and 'tangible' that she can look back and say "hey, my fricken parents bought me this when I was 1, isn't it schweet?".
Anybody do anything unique for their kids b-days? Like a coin from the year they were born or anything like that? The only 'toy' I can see would be like a really badass dollhouse that will last forever and she can one day give it to her daughter...I'm having trouble thinking of anything else, and my pal google hasn't helped me yet.

Fab4 got 1 share of Disney stock for her niece on her 1st birthday. She is wanting to do 1 share for every bday following. I think it's a pretty cool idea.

I bought my niece a share of Disney stock for her 1st birthday last year (from www.oneshare.com). They have a lot of different options. I am getting her 2 shares this year for her 2nd birthday.

She's 1, she won't remember anything from this bday and if you buy a toy or clothes they'll be outdated/broken/not-age-appropriate within a year, or stored in the attic within 5. Buy her a "I just put money into your college savings plan" present and call it a day.

That's true but you can also start some sort of collection that they may end up having forever.

I'm assuming you went this route because of the frame/engraving/certificate they provide as opposed to it being strictly for investment purposes? Does she like dolls or stuffed animals? I can't tell you how many girls I know that keep stuffed animals from their toddler years. Also, I like the Disney stock idea.

I think most girls today get a cell phone for their first birthday. OK, maybe not at one but I about shit last year when I took my daughter to a birthday and the girl who was turning 5 got an IPhone from her parents.

I got my daughter a very nice rocking chair for her first birthday. Bought it from the Amish folks. She enjoyed it for several years and even though it's now still sitting in her bedroom at my house, someday when she has kids she will have it for them. Or it can stay at Grandma's.

I agree with that. People waste too much money on toys that kids will never use or appreciate.

Completely agree, this last weekend we went to a 1 year old birthday/BBQ...we provided a stuffed hippo. The parents had to have spent well into 4 figures and some of the gifts were ridiculously crazy expensive, especially the clothes. Do they not understand kids outgrow things?

I think we bought our nephew a savings bond for his birthday and for Christmas. Boring, yes, but more worthwhile than most of the crap he'll get.

I would get her a keepsake. Something she can keep and cherish as she gets older. A sterling silver trinket will always remind her of not only her youth, but your love for her. And hopefully it will be something she will eventually be able to pass along to her children as a family heirloom.

This thought process always bothered me some. Why would one need a trinket of any kind to be reminded of the love bestowed upon them by a family member? It makes no sense.

I don't get that either. That's the same kind of thinking about wedding rings too, isn't it? Can't possibly be in love without a huge honking rock to show everyone.
Honestly, until your kid can walk and talk, they aren't going to remember anything you do or buy for them. I can't remember what I got for my 1st birthday, I don't know anyone who can. Birthday parties at that age are more for the adults, the baby isn't going to give a crap.
