There is NO SOLICITING sign at both entrances, yet we still get people knocking at our door almost daily - cable companies, church people, Dispatch people, etc. I always politely tell them once that soliciting isn't allowed and that they have to leave the complex...and to man they all say "oh I'm not selling anything".

So they don't know what soliciting means, but how can we stop this? I don't want to waste the police's time by having them come out but I'm about to. Legally speaking, are the solicitors violating any laws or just breaking our condo policy? One cable solicitor told me he's allowed to be here because his boss told him so. I called and tracked down his boss and raised hell the next day.

My breaking point with all this came last week when I came down from putting my 1 yr old down for bed and after hearing the doorbell I found this little ghetto gangster who was selling the Dispatch on my porch making funny faces to my 2.5 yr old thru the window. I told him to gtfo my porch, but he's lucky I didn't break his jaw.

Anyone know?

I used to get those guys...They used to come at like 7 at night and it was annoying as shit. But I never told them to gtfo or wanted to break their jaw, you sir are a racist!!!!

heck, my neighborhood takes it too seriously. there isnt even trick or treating! i bought all kinds of candy and i didnt see one person out. yet there are kids in all the condos around me. i had candy till december!

I guess I expected this. No real answers. Lots of opinions from people without kids about what a terrible person I am. You should have seen this loser. I'm not sure he was even a legit solicitor.

Anyone have a real legal answer?

Some towns/cities require solicitors to first obtain a solicitors license and pay a small fee. At that time the should be instructed what areas which do not permit soliciting. However if you don't live in an area with such regulations or if the punk isn't following the rules I suppose you could post your own sync on your home. If the problem persists you need to contact your local government official.

Who cares? Take 30 seconds, answer the door, and tell them no thanks and close the door. They're trying to earn a living, and unless they're being really aggressive after you tell them no, just be a nice person.

And lol at ghetto piece of trash because he was having fun with your kid. Sounds like a true scumbag to me. Should have beat his ass for that sign of disrespect.

If you want a real legal answer, you'd probably want to talk to a local lawyer. For off the cuff thoughts, my first thought would be that non-commercial solicitation is probably protected under the First Amendment, albeit subject to some regulation by the municipality.

The church's have to be registered with the state as a non-profit or something like that and have to carry name badges.

I immediately thought of this, as well. Non-commercial will probably have a different set of hoops to jump through. I know that in my industry, they are exempt from being required to scrub call lists against the national DNC list for that very reason.

Most churches do register as non-profits, so that wouldn't be an issue. Didn't know about the name badges, though.

I do know that they, like any other entity, are not allowed to leave any materials they bring to your home in your mailbox. I actually reported a rather persistent local church body for that after I'd twice called them and asked them to stop.

my mother in law taped a post it next to the doorbell of her condo that says no solicitation. sounds like the morons coming to you might not know what that means but it might work.
