Question: My wife tends to misplace things, and sometimes has no idea. I was at her parent's this past weekend, going through some old things, deciding if we wanted them or not. I stumbled upon an old work check that was from February 2004, for $400+. It was uncashed. My first reaction was, "geesh, she must not have been that hard up for money!"
Then we got to talking and were wondering about the process of obtaining the money. Since she earned the money, yet never cashed the check, is she entitled to the $400+? NOWHERE on the check or stub say that it needs to be cashed within 90 days, etc.
Is she entitled to it?
Do you think we'd be able to obtain the funds?
Note: I'm not going to just go to the bank and cash it. I will first call their bank and talk with them, and them call the company.
What say you?

Checks expire after 180 days normally, but it's probably unclaimed funds now.
Just contact the employer and explain it. They'll likely just cut you another one

That's one of the things I'm wondering. My wife doesn't have a great memory. I told her, "I'm sure that is something that you would remember, losing a paycheck." She said, "Not necessarily."
Would their records show (do you think) if they voided that check to cut her another one?

Most likely, yes. Depends on the company - does she still work there?

Im not sure what the bank can do about it. Call the employer and speak with them if not just deposit it. For the love of god don't cash it.

if its that old its most likely at the unclaimed funds department. Go to missingmoney.com and search for it. a check is void after 180 days and a company is required to send unclaimed money to the state after its stated time. Ohio is 5 years ithink so after 2006 a company HAS TO Send it to state.

All the bank's going to do is contact the company that issued the check. Or just refuse to cash it. Just call the company that cut the check.

Well, it's not on missingmoney.com. She does not work for this employer any more, and hasn't for about 5-6 years or so. She knew the owners well. I'm encouraging her to call them, but she said she feels stupid. I told her she IS stupid, having married me.

Companies are REQUIRED to send unclaimed funds to the state after a certain time period. However, they would have certainly tried to contact heror maybe even sent her a new check that she cashed in replace of that one. The company will work for will be able to verify. Contact their accounting dept.

I just don't understand why you would post this on here...call the employer, explain the situation and get it solved that way. Turdball.
