CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A Texas mom has been sentenced to probation and has lost custody of her children for spanking her daughter.

Rosalina Gonzáles of Corpus Christi pleaded guilty on Wednesday to Injury to a Child for swatting the 2-year-old on her buttocks.

According to prosecutors, Gonzáles in December hit the girl with an open hand, leaving some red marks.

Police arrested Gonzáles after the child's grandmother reported the injuries and took the child to a hospital.

Gonzáles will serve five years probation, take parenting classes and follow guidelines laid out by Child Protective Services

KZTV10.com reports that the ruling judge in the case made it clear that spanking is a crime.

"You don't spank children today," Judge Jose Longoria is quoted as having said. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children."

It's sad that she was taken to the hospital over injuries. Red marks are not injuries. Also, Jose Longoria is a douche.

Cripes, this is disturbing. You guys wonder why kids act the way they do today, they have very little fear. With judges like this, parents and schools are completely handcuffed when it comes to disciplining.

Yep. This is also why we have school shootings, pervs, and other idiots running around today. And why the Juvenile Detention Centers are full,,,,,, Because parents cant/wont spank their kids. Instead we are suppose to give them a "timeout"! Bull crap!!!! My kids get spanked when needed. And they know it. I HATE the timeout thing.

Like most of you have said my parent would be on death row. Don't know how many times I got the backhand to the mouth. The worst part was I had braces but that sure didn't stop them. My Grandma would always use a wood paddle with holes in it. Damn that fucking hurt.

Either got the belt or got to pick my own willow switch. I was lucky. My dad chased my older brother down the road cracking him with one of those orange extension cords after my bro stole my dads truck to go see his girlfriend and hit the ass end of an Amish buggy (no injuries).

I was surprised to see it was the grandmother that acted upon this. You would think at her age she would condone spanking and generally not being a pussy.

Well, by the time I came around, we had invented a way of turning wood into things, other than using them for fire and paddles. :D

Plus the trees at my house, were all oak trees. No switches to be had. :p

It's tough to tell from the article how bad the spanking actually was--certainly there are situations where spanking can cross the line into abuse, and generally, the question is whether it leaves a mark (i.e. a bruise).

Re spanking/not spanking: I support the right of parents to spank, but study after study shows that spanking isn't a particularly effective means of discipline. If you want your kids to be well-raised, provide clear rules/expectations and consistently enforce them. The manner by which you do that doesn't matter as much. It's not like bad parents would suddenly become great parents if only they could spank; on the contrary, bad parents end up getting lazier and act like spanking is going to do their job for them.

I think the issue here is the way(s) to "consistently enforce" the rules. With those methods being limited to "sitting in time out" or grounding a child, it gets harder and harder to send a message.

The thing about the switch that sucked was that you always had to go "big" when picking it out. If it was too small the parent did the honors.

I'm not sure that's true. No doubt parents have to be more involved/creative if they want to discipline through means other than hitting their kids. Proper discipline of a child takes work on the parents' end, too, which is something some parents don't like.

I was spanked; Mrs. FFT was spanked; and we're certainly not anti-spanking. But she's a psychotherapist who works with kids & adolescents, often related to discipline issues. Overwhelmingly, parents come in who set poor boundaries and are inconsistent with their discipline, and yet think that only if they spanked more, the kid would behave. Parents often spank out of anger, as a way to vent their own frustrations, which isn't helpful to a kid. Particularly for younger kids (say, younger than 8), it is very confusing to be told not to hit, and then know that if they do it, someone will hit them. Those mixed messages are really confusing for younger kids. Spanking is very effective for immediate compliance, but it's not as effective for long-term behavior modification.

The bottom line is that spanking isn't some panacea that resolves all discipline issues. Only consistent, involved parental enforcement--in whatever manner--gets long-term results.
