So I bought a boat yesterday (16 ft Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 3.0L) and all the previous owner gave me for the trailer was the current registration, is that all I need to get the registration in my name? I have absolutely no way of getting it weighed empty without driving illegally.

This thread is now about where we should go boating on July 3rd within 1.5 hours of Columbus

You will need to get a new license plate, for one. Go to your local BMV and they will tell you what to do. (and gladly accept your check!)

Im pretty sure you have to drive it to a marina or scale to get it weighed BEFORE BMV can/will give you a registration/plates. Gotta drive illegally...

Isn't there a tag on the trailer stating its' empty weight? Not a boat trailer but the couple I owned had the weight on there somewhere, I also had origination "titles" that had the weight on there also. Year, make and model of trailer should produce a number via the web too I would think.

There is a weight on the current registration in the previous owners name. Its only 700 lbs. I heard somewhere to produce the old registration and the serial #.

I think you should be fine with that, though I had the origination "titles" they aren't actually a legal document the BMV recognizes, though when I sold them I gave them to the new owner. Unlike a real title, they don't have places to sign and sale price info on the back.

Should be pretty easy. When I bought a jet ski they asked what kind of trailer it was as they had sizes and weights of many type of boat trailers to help people out.

Ya know what they say...the best two days for boat owners is when they buy it....and when they sell it!

Goodluck!

Best two days of a boat owner: Day you buy it and the day you sell it. Take it to the BMV like they say. No need to get it weighed.

Here is what mine looks like.

Now to fix all the trailer wiring tomorrow.

Also, I am changing this thread title to where we should go within 1.5 hours of Columbus on July 3rd

Lakes will be balls to the wall packed that weekend.

West of Columbus you have Lake Loramie in Ft Loramie.
Also Indian Lake is an hour west of Columbus.

They will be balls to the wall packed.

I can get to teh 270 loop in 90 min and taht is kinda hustling but I know a lake, a large one, that will be largely unused I bet.

Grand Lake St Mary's on the boarder of Auglaize and Mercer county. Largest man made lake in Ohio.think 13,500 acres. Take 33 West and you will get within a mile of that lake.

but there is a catch...you can google the lake and figure out what it is...

I know St. Mary's has an algae problem.

We are thinking of either doing the Muskingum River or Seneca Lake.

Eh, depends on when you want to go out. We never have a problem when we go out on that day. Father-in-law has a 17' Chaparral.

Indian Lake. They also have a spectacular fire works show that you can watch from your boat while in the middle of the lake. Good bars/restaurants you can dock your boat at too.

I live like 15 minutes from it. If you want to go there and want me to show up, show you around, hang out with you, slip you a date rape drug and bang you in the butt....just send me a PM.

Buckeye Lake, you can get wasted at the bars and listen to some good music. I highly recommend you don't take any body tubing or skiing. You wouldn't believe the idiots that will fly down the lake pulling somebody on a tube when there is not any room to move out there.

If you're there, and you come ashore, let me know. We'll be there, and there will be adult beverages involved.
